Dear Support,

I bought a Macbook pro retina recently, and now the screen keeps flickering, and is very annoying.

I am not sure how to reproduce it, when it happens, it will have horizontal lines cutting across the screen very quickly and disappear.

It happens randomly across all application.

It is the same as,

I have updated all patches, and still doesn't help.

Could you please advice how to fix it? Do i have to send it back?

Kind Regards

Andy

My 4 month old MBP 15 Retina with all updates has started the same thing within the last two weeks.  Getting ready to call it in.

I am running into the same issue but noticed it is happening on my 2nd monitor.  I've noticed it on Lion and upgraded to Mountain Lion only to notice it got worse. It is most obvious with the dock bar and scrolling up and down a web page in Safari.  Chrome is chunky but not flickering.

If I move the window over to the laptop's main screen the flicker goes away.  My 2nd monitor is using DVI via a MDP adaptor.  Hooked the monitor up via HDMI and it's still there so I know it's not the adapter.  Hooked a Mac Mini up to the monitor and there is no flicker so it's not the monitor.

It seems to also move around like a bad cold.  Before I started writing this message I noticed my menus flickering with other apps.  Come back to it in 5 minutes and it's gone.  Bad video RAM or graphics card switching is possible but it most likely seems like a software problem to me.

Has anyone else noticed it being an issue on a second screen?  Argh! it's flickering now as I scroll to read the original comments...

I had this issue at the end of August after a month owning the rMBP. I took it to the Apple Store and even though I couldn't reproduce it, they took my word for it. They replaced the logic board on the device. Two weeks after I got it back it started happening again. It happens at least once a day, sometimes worse than other times, but under no definitive circumstances.

I've experienced it mostly while on Safari, but recently it's happened when I've moved the laptop. Since the logic board was replaced, the inside of the machine is not the same as it was when I bought it. I don't know what the issue is. I took it into the Apple Store again and there aren't many widespread problems apparently and they really haven't heard about it. I don't know what to do. This is really annoying.

    Hello guys,

I have exactly the same issue for a few days.

I just posted a post in the forum because I didn't found this post before : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4471150

Hope we will have some news about this problem.

For your information, I am in France.

Well guys, I've just confirmed that this has to be a hardware issue, not software. This is happening to me on Windows 8 installed via Boot Camp. That's not a good thing.

Me too... guess I'll be taking mine in soon. Thankfully still under warranty, but not looking forward to being without my computer for any length of time. I wish I didn't like Apple products, because lately I seem to always get defective Apple products. I had to have my Thunderbolt display replaced last month... I had a defective iPod a few years ago... and a defective Mac Pro... Their quality assurance isn't so hot.

I also had the same issue. I searched high and low to find the sollution, and i thought maybe i could be a hardware problem.. but then i ran Color Sync with the tool "verify".. And it found 2 software problems..

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/Profiles/HD 709-A.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is missing.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/Profiles/SD 170M-A.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is missing.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

This problem cannot be fixed unless you change the files rights and sharing.

If you locate those icc-files, right click on them, and choose "show info" you can change the rights on the specified files. Change them all to "read and write". Do this on both files. Then run "Repair" in Color Sync.

This fixed the problem for me (no flickering for 30 minutes, before i did this the screen flickered every 2 minutes)..

Remember to change back to "read only" in both files..

Hope this will fix your issue!

I'm skeptical that this will fix it, but I hope you are correct nonetheless. Unfortunately for me, my flicker is very inconsistant. I sometimes go a couple days without a single problem. Othertimes it is nearly constant. I haven't pinned down the steps to reproduce yet, and as such, haven't taken it to the Apple store yet.

I tried it, I'll keep you aware of if it's working or not.

I asked at an apple store how to repair it, and you have to call them and take a rendez-vous, then they will look on your mac with their tools to find what's wrong. If it is harware it can take up to 10 days to repair it, so quite long.

    I still have the issue

I have others issues on color sync with Adobe profile, but even if I change the authorizations, color sync can't fix the issues.

    Hello,

I have the same issue with rMBP 13 with Windows 7. Did you take your computer to Apple? I would like to learn their solution.

I am having the exact same issue. I have also noticed that some graphical applications (3D editors and even movie players) sometimes produce very faint "snow" on the application screens. Also using gfxCardStatus seems to indicate that the problems only occur when the computer is using the discrete nVidia graphics - it doesn't appear for me when using the integrated graphics...

I am beginning to suspect the powersupply to be the culprit actually - I don't think I have yet experienced the issue when using my Macbook on batteries.. How are your experiences with this?

I am going to bring mine in to an Apple store soon, but since one user already has had the logic board replaced without solving the problem, I kinda want to know a bit more about the problem first...
