Ios6 causing excessive data usage?

    Having the same issue and am so frustrated at both Verizon and Apple.  I have the iPhone 5 and although I've never used more than 1.2gb/month of data since I've had my Verizon account (14 years), this month I'm over 5 - just on my phone!  My daughter has the 4S with the new ios6 and even though her cellular data network is set to off with a parental control password that only I can use, she somehow used over 1.3gb this month? 

     

    My husband who is apparently the smarter one of the bunch has the new Droid Max and NEVER uses our home wifi - says it's too slow - and has only used 1.6gb of data this month - really?

     

    Apple KNOWS there is a problem and has since the beginning of October, yet don't have a solution.  This article http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/30/iphone-5-carrier-update-fixes-bug-caus ing-cellular-data-use-while-on-wi-fi advised to update your carrier settings and that when you've done that successfully, you should see "Verizon 13.1" ... I go into that setting repeatedly and NEVER get a pop-up box telling me to update anything.  My version reads "Verizon 13.3" and I can't update anything.  But normally isnt the higher number the most up to date version?  None of that even makes sense.  Does it make sense to anyone else and I"m just missing something? Or does anyone know how to manually start that update?

     

    The Apple support rep I talked with didn't even know there was an issue - apparently the training and communication departments are as poor as the engineering department that can't offer a solution to a known problem.

     

    Verizon is of no help either.  The 3rd rep I spoke to yesterday also didn't know anything about this issue and was just condescending and rude telling me that their systems don't make mistakes; it charges me for the exact usage and that they'd never overcharge data to a customer, and that it's NOT possible to have data charged to the network if on a wifi device. 

     

    I'm completely frustrated and don't know where else to turn.  This has been a issue for 2+ months with no end in sight, other than for us to either continually turn the cellular data off, which means we also miss MSM messages, Visual Voice Mail, Voxer and a handful of other things that don't work just on wifi - or pay for the data even though we're paying for a wifi service as well!  I don't see how they can keep getting away with this type of poor service.

     

    I don't see how they can continue to get away with this.  The consumers - US - are paying for excessive data amounts and they can't find a solution?  I am going to talk with my attorney about recovering the money I'm already out and will apparently be out for who knows how long - I could easily see this getting class action status too with the number of people affected!

    Verizon has been very helpful to me, and has put a note on my account for the last two months that stated I would not be charged for any data overages. You should perhaps ask to escalate your claim at Verizon to someone who knows what they're talking about.

    I think AT&T is catching on to this. I checked my data "usage" yesterday and it showed 768Mb for the billing cycle. I checked again this morning and it showed 591Mb used. I think AT&T is going back and adjusting for overusage caused by iOS.

    I have the same issues.

    Last month Tesco Mobile informed me I was going over my data limit so I had to disable data for a whole month which was pretty annoying for a smart phone! On the upside the battery lasted 3 days easy.

     

    I even did a complete reprep of iOS6 (no restore!) and spent a load of time re-adding apps, configuring etc

     

    Today I went in store to Apple Birmingham to ask them why iTunes Match wasn't showing all my Artists, they messed with it, couldn't fix it.

     

    Tonight I've just checked my data usage because I'm keeping an eye on it and guess what? That's right, it's been downloading ever since midday when the Apple guy re-enabed iTunes Match.

     

    To add insult to injury I still can't see artists in my Music app.

    For now I've disabled it and hope it doesn't do it again until there's a fix out.

    Virgin Australia acknowledged the problem finally.!!!!!!!!

     

    After having all those miserable calls with each person in Vrigin customer care, Last week I sent them a mail stating that if my excess charges due to this software bug is not addressed, I will have to raise a complaint with TIO (an organisation in Australia to address telecom disputes)

     

    I got a sweet call from one of their associates saying their technical team had contacted Apple and they have acknowledged the issue. Further excess data charges in my current bill and in future bills will be waived untill the bug is fixed.

     

    So if there are any Virgin Australia customers here trying to make the customer representative understand this problem, let me know. I will give you my case number which you can quote to them.

     

    Excepts from my mail to Virgin,

    "Now here is what I am expecting from Virgin as a customer who bought his phone on a contract which is still under warranty,

     

    I would like to have the excess data usage charges waived off in account of this issue in the phone software.

     

    Also Virgin to address this issue with Apple asap and help in resolution.

     

    If Virgin could not provide the above mentioned resolution I will have to address it with TIO."

    Unfortunately, when we all switch to Android or Windows phones.  I know I'm done waiting, and after months of complaints and waiting, Both Apple and the carriers are still pulling the "this is the first I've heard of this issue" crap.  We are treated like imbeciles in return for the money we spend and loyalty to their products.  It's sad to see how they could care less.

     

    And now, I come to find my icloud email account is loaded with spam and I don't even use that email.  Truly disgusted with this company.  I'll get a windows 8x, as android software is a mess.  I'd rather go for the "dismal third" in the race rather than put up with being ignored.

    I'll be patient and wait for the next iOS update.

    My iCloud account doesn't attract spam, but then I primarily use gmail which works fine.

    Ah, another 300 MB. via iOS6.0.1, unwanted dl. of what, I can't say.  All the 'use cellular' is 'turned OFF'.

    So Apple and Verizon are working together to rip off current data plan users.  At least it's not on a shared data plan, which would rip off thousands of customers.  Guess it's better to buy the Galaxy Tabs than the iPads, at least they haven't slipped data over usage under the rug.

    Except, as stated many times previously, Verizon is not charging data overages to people who are experiencing this issue. You just need to call them, and perhaps Apple, as Apple can go through their channels to Verizon, too.

    Ok, the iPad3 with 'cellular data' OFF, it's now gone over 500MB. in less 3 hours.  Time to take out the SIM and sell this iPad3. Can't trust Apple and Verizon anymore.

    yeah i'll be wasting another hour or two helping Verizon correct temporarily another one of their mistakes.  If only we all could be paid for our time wasted on this problem.

    I'm also having the same problem with excessive data use.  Spoke to AT&T, they didn't even acknowledge there was a problem but told me to work with Apple and call them back and they'll take care of the overages.  Searched these forums and of course there are millions of users complaining about this, yet when I spoke with Apple they are clueless or they are lying about it.  Apple rep told me to do a full restore of my phone.  Of course, this solved nothing other than wasting my time to download all of my apps again because he said if I restore from iCloud I'll just restore the problem.  I downloaded Dataman Pro to my iPad 3 and watched the usage statistics.  Since last night, while phone was plugged in and connected to wifi and I was asleep, it used over 500MB of cellular data.  The apps that Dataman logged were: push, social networking, and geotag.  All my apps were closed.  Unfortunately, Dataman Pro for iPad does not yet show how much data was used per application, that apparently will be available in a future update.  Until then, I'm stuck with clueless Apple representatives and useless AT&T support.  All this definately started happening for me after the IOS 6.01 update as far as I can tell.  This has cost me about $50 in overages so far this month and I'm not even half way through my billing cycle.  Who's starting the class action lawsuit and where do I sign up?

    Correction: the apps that logged usage also included media server, sync service, store service.  My suspicions are that one or all of those three are largely responsible for the massive data usage.  According to my Dataman Pro log, I'm aeraging about 100KB of data every hour since midnight.  Note: my iPad is plugged in and connected to wifi but it's still using 100KB of data every hour.  iCloud settings are set up so that it is not supposed to use cellular date.  Podcasts are aslo set up to not use cellular data and not automatically download.  i've checked the main setting for podcast as well as each individual subscription.  All are showing that they are set to not automatically download.  This problem is beyond frustrating.  I am hating Apple right now.

    I had same issues. alredy had to pay excessive data usage $130 last month.

    does anyone refund from Apple?
