I am trying to update my copy to Motion 5.0.5 however the appstore always comes up with the message Motion failed to download

Can I remove some items to make it force a fresh download?

I have 5.0.4 installed

Thanks fro any help!  Alfred Schmidt

I assume you launched the App store application and clicked on the update tab and it showed you the update for Motion. After you clicked update and entered your password is that when you got the error message? If that is the case I would drag the motion app to the trash, but don't empty it. Also make sure you unmount any external drives which have a clone of your system drive and timemachine drive. Then open the app store, select purchases and redownload Motion. It will be 10.0.5.

Jim...From App Store motion starts downloading and then when it gets to "less than one minute remaining" it crashes!

I have seen this issue posted in the past but not recently with this latest update. If I remember correctly after you select install the text by the status bar says downloading and then changes to installing as it nears the end. You said the crash occurs with less than one minute remaiing so I would assume the problem is associated with install and not a download problem. OS 10.7 and 10.8 check the download for integrity before installing so I suppose it could be an error in the download. Did you trash the app and its preferences as I mentioned previously and try a reinstall? I would repair permissions and try again. The posts I recall seeing previously had no solutions posted other than trying multiple times until it worked. You might try a different internet connection such as at an Apple store if that's possible. If you have Applecare I'd give them a call if you don't have success. Wish I could be of more help.

Jim...Solved!  Went through files and still had some old files from "Final Cut Studio" so I deleted all "Motion" references and reinstalled from account "Purchases" and that cured the problem!!

    Tank u berry MUCH!

Good to hear. Glad you got it sorted.

How do you know what files or how do you define "Motion references" so I can try that search technique?

I am getting that error when trying to update or download Motion 5.05 from 5.04. I put all my Motion app files into the trash but updating from purchases or update or re-downloading from the App store still causes the error.

Do you do this (search) through finder or the old or new motion or you do a global search on the word "Motion" or is there a file naming scheme that will tell you when a final cut pro file has a link or embed to motion.

Can you narrow down the search technique with a little more info please.

    Appreciated much.

If you have Final Cut Studio or earlier version of Motion make sure you put them in a folder, named whatever you like, in Utilities folder. For Final Cut Studio or apps that shipped with it Apple recommends a separate folder so they do not appear in your Applications Folder. Then try to download 5.0.5.

I put my older final cut files and all my motion files in a folder inside the desktop. But so far no luck with updating. What was the reference to the Utilities folder?

Any other ideas? I'm still stuck.

What Apple recommends is that you place Final Cut Studio in a folder called old final cut or whatever you want to call it and place that folder in your Utilities folder. In your case you had installed Motion 5.0.4 so I am assuming that if you had Final Cut Studio that caused no problem when you upgraded to Motion 5.0.4. Most of the time it seems that when there is a problem upgrading the solution has been to put the Motion application in the trash but not emptying the trash. Then go into your purchased tab in the App store and you should see the install buuton. From your postings I assume you have tried that and it downloads but fails when the install bar changes from download to install. Is that all correct? What error message do you get if any?

I think I got it. I put the desktop folder into the utilities folder and found some old Final Cut Studio straglers (not sure about the codecs or are the .fcp files the most important) I went into the app store clicked on the purchases tab and then clicked on the link right next to the motion icon and then clicked on upate and it turned into "installing" and thenI moved the app back to applications and I ran it and check the version and now it's 5.0.5.

The app store no longer shows error in red next to the update text field to the right in the motion icon row.

    Whew.

    Thanks.

Was having the same difficulty updating Motion 5 to the latest version.

After several failed attempts and having to retrieve an old username and password, I trashed, BUT DID NOT EMPTY TRASH, the version of Motion I had, (it was 5.04) and then logged back into the APP Store and whola!!! There was Motion 5.06 ready to install. It took about 15 minutes...Thanks to all who recommended getting current version of Motion into Trash. Up and running now on work in progress basketball documentary.
