That was my understanding of POP which is why I looked into IMAP. Everyone I spoke with agreed that POP was "old" but didn't feel it was worth the trouble of switching. Sort of an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
If I were to make a clone, would I need to clone the whole drive or could I clone only the Mail files?

Clone the whole drive, and increment it regularly (CCC will do that) it will save you when things go belly up.

Thanks for your help. As soon as I get myself out of this Mail mess, I'll look at cloning the drive. I've looked at CCC before. I didn't follow through, I think because I'd need a second external drive, I have one that I use with Time Machine. Guess I'll need to revisit that idea.
Appreciate your help and input.
