Sorry - I should add that I'm using an iMac9,1 with OS 10.6.8.

This problem's been dogging me for years and I install every update. I just have to put in the preferences to email everything I send out to myself as well, to actually know if something was sent, and then sweep out the misleading trash in Drafts once I know. I do have a complicated setup where 4 POP accounts get forwarded to a me.com account, and then I have to choose return addresses depending on who I'm answering. But is it asking too much for Mail to know that an email has been sent?

That happens to me, too. I think it's an autosave that sometimes doesn't get deleted after the email is sent. I always delete such a draft after checking my sent folder and seeing the message there.
