Startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned error

I have about 18 GB of free space on my MacBook Pro Snow Leopard. When I try to install the windows support software, I get a message that says the startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned when I have well over the required amount of free space. How do I fix this problem?
