Same problem here. I will try to bring the laptop to the local reseller tomorrow. Hope they will replace the fans.

I'm taking mine in Apple Store Hong Kong - it rather conveniently stopped making the noise this morning as if it could sense it's demise was imminent.

However I asked my mother to call AppleCare in the UK (I live in Dubai no AppleCare) so I could get a case number - I have no idea what she said to them although the notes I gave her to say were:

    Problem with crackling sound

Right side of machine makes a strange and worrying loud crackling sound.  This sound is pretty much constant when doing graphics intensive tasks, however relatively quiet at other times.

Sound is present on graphics intensive tasks such as gaming, at other times it is only heard occasionally.

Here are Apples notes on my case which I found somewhat amusing, can anyone else see what the problem is?!:

    MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

    Case ID: 362415172

    Case closed

The CD/DVD drive is making unusual noises

    Hmmm...

I heared the same problem from the left side of my Macbook Pro Retina 15" after one month of use.

It is possible to hear the noise only in a silent condition and placing the ear near the left air holes in slow velocity  fan condition.

When fun rise the velocity is not possible to hear the noise.

    Is this the problem?

    Thank you

It's the same problem I had. In my case it was the right fan that was replaced from my local apple reseller. Wen I called them to make an appointment they said these know about this problem and they fix in warranty.

@buttmonki: Cool you've got one of the limited MacBook Pro with a cd/DVD drive... ;-) then it is clear from where the noise is coming... :-)

    Thanks for reply.

Can you tell me if the noise is clearly audible?

it is audible if you are in quiet location. I noticed the noise wenn I was alone in the office and it was quiet.

You should hear it wenn you put the Notebook close to your ear.

I don't know, the apple store is not so near from me. Is not a big problem for now and is very hard to decide

This macbook don't have HD sounds so is strange to hear this noise

Is strange that the noise not increase with the increase of the velocity of the fans.

@tjh81 can you update your situation please.

Could you tell if the rattling noise was clearly audible or only in silent condition?

How did you solve the problem?

Thats the reason why I wanted the problem to be fixed, because the MacBook (as far as I know) hasn't got any other physical parts beside the Fans that could produce such a noice. I mean for a Notebook that is so expensive and only 3 Months old it is not acceptable...

It doesn't need to be an Apple Store, search for a local reseller that is Apple certified.

Macbook Pro Retna was purchased in July. My left fan was making a grinding noise then a clicking noise. But it was not all the time. You could tell it was the left side as when you put your ear up to the right side it was noticeably quieter. Also when you powered off the macbook, as the fan started to stop, the clicking noise got slower and slower. I took it into the Apple store, they replaced the left side fan and now no grinding or clicking noise.

I would have thought the fans would have lasted longer than 6 months.

I have the same problem. I try to use Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) to solve my problem. It works. Can check this link for the reference. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I had the same issue popped up all of a sudden from no where today. It continued for 2 hours and by the time i opened the Apple Support Chat, it stopped :| But I decided to proceed with the Support and you can see their response below.

    QUOTE:

shut down your system and do a reset on what we call the SMC. The SMC manages the power and also the fans on the system. This should help things if it is something the reset can fix. If there is something physically wrong though, it will need to be looked at most likely.

Step 1) Plug in the power adapter

    Step 2) Shutdown the system

Step 3) Hold down Shift + Control + Option (Left hand side of keyboard) + the Power Button.  Keep all four buttons pressed for 5 seconds

Step 4) Release all the buttons at the same time.

Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC. You'll know you did it correctly if your computer does not turn back on.
