You are being modest... NOT greedy. FCPx is the single most CPU/RAM/ETC hungry app to ever surface...
Whatever amount of RAM you throw at FCPx it will inhale it... Just fill that baby up ;-)

If you're doing mostly rough cut w/ some effects like MB Looks, I find that 16-20 Gb is just right. I noticed that the RAM allocation is under control w/ 10.0.6. This is based on Activity Monitor readout for the past several weeks when 10.0.6 releases. Averages about 9-12 Gb for AVC-I 100 and h.264 source media. Prior to 10.0.6, it hogs everything. This changes if you're working w/ native 4K Red file. For me, 32-64 Gb on a Mac Pro is not at all unreasonable as I also running Compressor 4.0.5 and After FX CS6 simultaneously. I take full advantage of its RAM preview.
