Apple will provide a replacement iPad for about 1/2 the cost of a new iPad. You can get the glass replaced at 3rd party repair sources for less $, however, the Apple warranty will be voided.

Just be aware, if you use any unauthorized repair place - including doing it yourself - if you have any factory warranty left, it's gone and voided.
And, let's say you try DIY and mess it up and then try to take it to an apple store for their out of warranty replacment (that's what Texas is talking about, an out of warranty replacement), since the case can be made that you damaged it yourself, the store manager may decide that you're not eligible for a replacement.
Do as you want, just know the risks. Taking it to an apple store for an out of warranty replacement will run you a couple hundred dollars, but you get the 'sure bet' of a replacement with a 90 day warranty (or the remainder of your existing one). Or do it cheaper but know that you're on your own.
