My iphone 4 has same problem after updating to IOS6.

if the update is not working for the device, why they let people update?

Apple should reply on this issue, not blaming on the device, blame on the update.

I was having the same problem with my speaker not working all of the sudden.  Sometimes I had the text noise, but never was able to play music or hear my ringtone.  Also, my headphones worked fine. I tried all of the things that the other users suggested and nothing worked.  I went to apple and they replaced my speaker for free in store and everything works perfectly now.  The genius told me it was a "manufacturer error."  HTH.

I have the same issue, went to the genies store they told me it is hardware, i asked how could that be hardware when it works sometimes and others it does not.. it seems to be software issue. so he played with it and said combination of both.. bottom line you are SOL'd since your phone is 2 years old- why don't you upgrade to iphone 4 or iphone 5 basically by another iphone 4. hmm the phone is less than two years old since i bought it in feb 2011 and this happened by itself at midnight (every night at 12) the phone starts rebooting it self. it is like its possessed..

Bottom line upgrade your phone or live with the issue- thank you for coming by

now i regret converting my wife, my brother his wife and my buddies tobecome iphone fans. time to shop around

I wanted to give it a few weeks before I posted but magically, about a week after the new patch, my sound issue was resolved.  I was skeptical at first and didn't get too excited because I figured it was just temporary and would go out again.  But (knock on wood) it has been about 2 weeks with sound and it's still there even after reboots, docking and undocking, dead battery, etc.. I'm not gonna say it's back for good, but maybe the patch and something I did (maybe docking/undocking?) provided the fix.  That's really the worst part about this issue is that I really can't even say what fixed it.  It just started working again for almost no apparent reason.

It thinks it's in "Docking" mode. To fix, Plug into a docking station, play music, then unplug from docking station, then try external speaker.

Oh gosh Apple. I still like you ... please don't get crappy now. It's rather obvious here, that it's not a hardware issue.

Having the same problems as you guys, no sound without cables. Appears to be this dock-bug, but I don't have my dock with me (just moved to US for 10 months.

I hope the geniuses are more capable than the guys overviewing this forum.

After two days with the same issue, trying all if the posted fixes, to no avail. Went to apple, said it was a dock connecter issue. My iPhone 4S was two months out of warranty. Said there was nothing they could do. Said I could purchase a refurbished for $199. I declined. This morning, I double clicked the home button, to where the airplay symbol is, tapped on AirPlay. It gave me an option of AirPlay or dock connecter,  switched to AirPlay and bam all sounds works again, music, apps, text everything. I had never seen the the dock connection option before! Hope this works for you. If it does you can send me half of the money you saved from a purchase of a new device:)

Hope this fix well bring less stress to your holidays as it will mine. We expect a lot from Apple! When our "I" products don't work it ***** and life is just not the same. Apple needs to slow down and get back to their key phrase "it just works"

Exactly the same problem here. No sound unless the phone is ringing. Also can't use Bluetooth, volume control etc pretty much the same as everyone else in that the problems started after iOS6.0.1. Too much of a coincidence. Won't be buying apple again. This was my first experience of apple products.

I have the iPhone 4s and updated to iOS 6.  Since then I can no longer play music in my car (VW) which has an iPod connector built in to the car and on my two different docking stations at home.  So annoying!

One of my docking stations is a Sony Dream Machine.  I downloaded the D Sappli app (which Sony recommends for playing through the Dream Machine) which worked prior to updating.  Now the app no longer helps and when I dock my iPhone. It says "This Accessory is not supported by iPhone".

So, I totally get the frustration of all of you posting about this.  Hopefully they send out a fix SOON.  I really don't want to upgrade my phone yet as it has worked fine for the last year.

In one of the posts it was suggested to dock and undock the phone. I did that too since i realized that the phone was not showing iPhone option in the tab where we choose the audio output either as iphone or apple tv. it only showed headphone and apple tv. when i connected my phone to the laptop and then removed it, i got the iphone option back. clearly this was a software issue according to me. I updated to iOS 6.0.1 yesterday. I also noticed that since morning today my vibrate alerts are not working. when i plug a headphone and push the button on the left side down, it vibrates once but after that there is no vibrate alert or anything. That problem i have yet to troubleshoot. rebooting or reset may or may not work.
