Before you go through that trouble open About this Mac > More Info... > System Report > Audio and see if the system actually knows it has a microphone.  Then you can look into Applications > Utilities >  Audio MIDI Setup and see if the microphone is there, select it and make sure the sliders are set to full. Then in System Preferences look for Sound > Input and make sure it shows up there and the sliders are at least half way up. If none of that works do a

    SMC RESET

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    • Wait 15 seconds.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

    • It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

then go through the process of looking for the microphone again as the reset may reenable the mic.

    Also,

    Long shot, but...

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

Thanks but i tried two times a reset and it did not work.  I'm a little discurage.  And i did see the microphone in configuration audio and MIDI.  It has 2 entries / 0 exits and a black mic at the end.  The format is 44100,0Hz and a 2 ch-24 bit.  I but the 1 and 2 to the maximum but could not touch the master. Do i have other options?

    Thanks

Have you also checked System Preferences > Sound > Input to see if the Internal Microphone is selected?

You have received good advice except one thing from what I scanned. You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. Call them, the number is in the manual, if you live within 50 miles (USA & UK) of an AASP you can request in-home service. I would recommend that before schleping the thing into a store.

We're leaving tomorrow but will be passing through Portland about 9AM, a bit early for lunch. And I'm traveling with my recalcitrant sister and curmudgeon nephew both Microsoft lovers....somehow they just haven't been able to see the light. Maybe too many negative Microsoft ions bombarding their foreheads. Well I'm being tough on my sis, she at least has an iPad.
