Lenn5 (and anyone else whose MBP won't boot), the Apple Store will run a diagnostic on the machine to reveal the problem.
However, you can do the same thing before taking it in, and it's a good idea to do so since almost certainly this will reveal the nvidia-related error code.
In brief, restart the computer and immediately press and hold the D key. This starts the Apple Hardware Test.
Wait until you see a 1980s-style graphic appear then let go. Follow the menu prompts. You'll be rewarded with an error code. (See further back in this thread for the specific code.)

I think the problem is that in many cases, the failing Nvidia chip takes out the entire logic board, so absolutely nothing works. At least in my case, I tried every diagnostic key combination at startup, including "D", and I could never get a reponse at all.
Just as a funny side note, when I picked up my MBP after the logic board was replaced, the Genius casually asked me, "Whoa, new logic board, eh? What, did you spill liquid on it?" When I muttered something about it being a known Apple defect, he just gave me this strange look and didn't ask any more questions.

I just came back from the Apple store. The first "genius" said that my GPU was definately toast and fried the logic board. But there was another "genius" helping the person next to me and he said he wanted to take a look in a few minutes. So the other "genius" took over and went in the back and got that thumb drive and the NVidia test software on it. It tried to run the test but since there was no video and the logic board didn't work he overruled the first "genius" and said that I have a bad logic board. He pulled that old trick saying that my MBP didn't give the right code. I told him how could it give any code with the logic board gone. He just mummbled. I argued with him for a while and told him that I was having video distortion problems up to the MBP finally not booting up. He gave me phony thing about 99% of MBPs with this problem don't have the dead logic board. I asked him where he got that number and he couldn't tell me. He just said that was his experience. I tried to tell him that the GPU could have fried the logic board and that many people have experienced this and gotten Apple to fix their MBPs. He wouldn't budge. He acted like he knew everything there was too know about this subject. A very bad Apple store experience. Was talked down too by the 2nd "genius."
I've got a call into Apple Customer Relations. Waiting to hear back from them.

Ugh, lenn, that's a bummer. You don't happen to have another Apple store nearby, do you? Or what if you just went back on a different day and saw a different "genius"?

Yea. There is another Apple store nearby but I'm fed up with those "geniuses." If it's not on their little iPad mini they walk around with they're clueless. The first "genius wanted me to produce the original receipt to prove to him that the MBP wasn't older than 4 years. I told him to look on his iPad Mini and after a while he finally found it.
Still waiting to hear back from Customer Relations. Btw, the 2nd "genius" kept telling me not to contact CR because it would involve Apple Legal and it would take forever. Just more lies.

I have a few posts in this topic, and I had had enough, so... I got a quote from Apple for $1200 (Canadian pricing I guess!) for a new "logic" board, but it would have the same chip!!!!. An authorized repair shop here quoted me $600.00. ANyway, It was broke soooooo... EBAY!!! It is a frisbee anyway, so I checked out and researched all the repairs for the "chip". I settled on a guy in Montreal, Yuri. He has the proper equipment, and so I dismantled and sent the motherboard away. I got it back 10 days later, and......It works great!!!! did every test I could and it passes all. The best part is, it is NOT the same chip, it is a 2010 version, so the issue is, well, no longer an issue. By the way, it was 190 cdn, and he ships it back to you included in that price. You can't even tell it's a new chip, very well done. I don't know if the "moderators" will allow, but here is the link:

I wonder why such huge variation in Apple's pricing?!
Canadian $ 1200 ~ US$ 1200.
But I was quoted flat rate US$ 310 for logic board/graphics repair (whatever's needed) at Apple store in California. For that 'flat rate' they'll also replace the faulty left-side cooling fan.
In contrast to some of the semi-clueless "geniuses" others have suffered through, I've been treated well and competently.

This just happened to me as well. I have an early 2011 13" MBP and last week it just stopped working and started giving the 3 beeps. So I took it in for repairs. Turns out they have to replace my logic board, RAM ....
I have a SVC PCBA MLB 2.3Ghz (10.7) processor.
Thank god I still had my warranty. I'm a new MBP user... have always used windows before. So I'm kind of worried after reading everyone's posts here. Does this continue to happen? Is there a permanent way of solving it?

I too am in a similar boat as <lenn5>, mine is a late 2008 MBP with 9600 graphics card. It started giving problems sometime last month, went to Gravis(the official apple sales and service in my town). They said they need 60€ to check the problems, since it was still booting up, I tried to keep it working. Last weekend it went down fully. Now Graivs sent a cost estimation of ~600€ for logic board replacement. I called Apple, initially they were very supportive, they told me they'll call the local service company and get back to me. But they haven't! when I call them they are telling me only 8600 cards are covered! We can see the many people have the same issues (apart from 8600). Even with 8600 cards they started acknowledging the problem only after seatle verdict.......
I am in Germany, and also as a student can't afford to get in to such headaches. Well some sour taste.....

No matter what any "genius" says a $2000+ computer should last alot longer than 4 years of normal use. 4 years is what you would expect from those $300-$500 laptops. Not an Apple product. Heck I still have Macs from 15 years ago that still work.

My mid 2010 logic board and heat assembly failed after 13 months which I posted several monthe ago. What I want to comment on this time is something I heard during a interview with a tech savy writer. He thought the "genius" of Apple is that they had a laptop made in China worth $80 in parts, sold it for multiples of that amount which then covered marketing costs, R&D, salaries, huge profit margins, creating high stock values. Guess the joke is on those of us who took the bait.

$80 in parts? NO way. That "tech savy writer" is misinformed and/or ignorant.
The display, Intel uP, drives, etc, are expensive parts. The Gross Margin on Macs is probably around 60%, meaning the $2000 computer has $800 parts and assembly costs in it.
You can search for "tear down" reports by the IHS company & others to get more accurate estimates of cost.

Yeah way. Did you consider the volume of Apple's wholesale purchases? I'm not talking about a $2000 computer; run the numbers on a MBP. And what sort of assembly costs do you think Apple incurs in China? Not much.
