I ask this because I have dozens of mail archive files from over a decade ago that I can't open.  Instructions cheerfully assured me that the files would always be expandable and readable, but now Mail has no clue what to do with them.  And it's not like I can crack the files open and just find a massive chunk of ASCII text that I can read.

Now I wish that I had just saved all that mail in low-tech text files...

So I'm wary of the super-easy saving of the iphoto library, especially since it leaves me with a single fat file that requires a particular version of a particular program to unpack years later.  I don't trust apple to write iPhoto so that it will be able to decipher an old format iPhoto library 10 years from now.  And then I'll be screwed.
