Just throwing in a 'Me Too' on this.
I had two ipod nano first gen replaced under the apple replacement program earlier this year. Now both of my ipod nano 6th gen replacements have suffered from this defect. Apple will not replace either one of them (I tried with both even though the failures were months apart) because the warrenity on my ipod nano was from original purchase date and not the date of my replacement ipod's showing up here.
Disappointed because the first iPod's lasted years and this replacements didn't get more then 3 months and six months respectively.

Same problem here. Bought mine May 2011, button fails five months after 1year warranty expires. Called Apple support and was told I'd have to pay $59 to repair/ replace Ipod. When I bring up this post and the apparent ongoing problem going back to September 2010 with the sleep/ wake button, and how it would seem to be a manufactures defect. I was told it would still cost me $59 to repair/ replace. Wish i had been lucky enough to have had my button fail sooner...

People, if you are truly reading this entire thread, then you will see that this is NOT a hardware issue. It is a standard software issue (like your computer gets from time to time) and it is a simple fix. I've already detailed the fix elsewhere in this thread so I'm not about to do it again. But there is no need to continue to bash Apple or spend any more $ to remedy the issue. If you can't take the time to use the previously described method of fixing your issue, then you probably shouldn't own anything electronic anyway.

If the button is stuck and can't move (no clicks) then no "software fix" in the world can help get that button working again!
For so many of us it is a hardware related problem! I coudnt wait around more, so I dissasembled the ipod and found two things that was faulty.
1) The little black spot in the middle of the switch was gone - This is how it should look like (Notice the black dot in center, that1 was missing.)
(I bought new on ebay for around 9 dollars, search for nano power button)
2) The distancepad on the buttonitself had moved away from center (just like another person confirmed on this diy: http://www.rbarrios.com/projects/NANO6BUTTON/ )
I replaced the switch and centerd the distancepad => Works flawlessly. So for me it's a clear hardware related issue - My theory is that the firmware update with double click powerbutton to switch song really reduced the lifetime of the button.

This confirms my own thoughts on the issue. With two ipod Nano's having the same issue in my possession I was unwilling to accept bad luck nor software glitch as the problem.
Not quite why Frazed is so convinced it isn't hardware as the buttons on my ipod nanos clearly do not move as they should.
As for the apple bashing, if the first Gen ipod nano i had lasted four years (give or take) without issue and was only returned because it was a possible fire danger but the replacement I got didn't last three months... I feel I should be allowed to say that I got a raw deal.
Apple owns my soul anyway. I have a shuffle too, plus an iphone and a mac mini. I want to be able to shout my rage knowing that I shall be back for more anyway. Please sir? Can I have a another nano? (I do like the new nano's look...)

i have the same problem but i have to put force to actually be able to sleep/wake the ipod. Last week i got my iphone replaced for the same problem (lock button issues). I got this ipod from the replacement thingy late last year. Since im out of warranty if i pay $75 do i get it repaired or replaced from apple? and if i get a replacement is it the refurbished 6th gen or the 7th gen that just came out?

You have to pay A$ 75 (depending on your location) to get it replaced with the same model and generation.
This is the link for the pricing and choose your location on the top.
You cannot buy the warranty and the only choice is to buy a new one, get it replace with a fee or leave it as it is.

I must have treated my Nano better than most - I got twenty months before my button bit it. Funny thing is it worked during my commute this morning and I was loving the tunes so much that I commented to my cube-mate "I love my iPod Nano! I love playing a soundtrack to my life! I don't know what I would do without my iPod." The gods have a wicked sense of humor

Well, I had an unproductive chat with Shatonya and John at some sort of Apple office in Georgia (I am in Montana). Years after the OP, 86 thousand views and 112 replies later, and Apple has not made any effort to satisfactorily resolve this problem. They want me to pay half again what I originally paid for this unit to replace the device. This will be my first and last purchase of an Apple product. Rest in pieces, Mr. Jobs, I hope the button that opens the gates to heaven is not held together by freakin' double-sided tape.

After wasted that 26 minutes of my life, all i got is that they cannot replace the nano that lasted me for less than a year.
oh yes, i also got a lecture on how much i should appreciate APPLE replacing my ipod 1st gen which could possiblly cause fire and explode in my car.
time to switch.

I have the same problem but they say my warranity is up because I purchased it from another store and they had activated the waranity before I purchased it. However, they said if I find the recpeit they can reinstate it but I can't find receipt anywhere. Can anyone advise me on a solution?
