If you think you may have entered the email account information incorrectly:
1.) If you aren't 100% sure about the settings for your email account, contact whomever handles your email for you and get the following information:
- email address
- outgoing email server address
- outgoing email server port number
- outgoing email server user name and password
2.) Go to iPhoto > Preferences > Accounts, click on the email account in question and then hit the "-" minus sign to delete it. You can then re-add it with the correct settings from your email provider.

I think your solution would have worked too but the problem was not as complicated. As it was, I just had to make sure my gmail account and the account in the iPhoto were exactly the same. Once I did that everything worked just fine.
I'll save your suggestion for a bigger mess some time in the future.
