I'm considering restoring my iPhone 4, as the 'Other' Data is up to 2.1 GB. I'm looking into backing up and I need to know a good way to back up my texts and contacts. Thanks in advance

If you are so adimitt about keeping your text messages you can email them to yourself - contacts you can do so via iTunes or iCloud

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.  Use it as designed.

Text messages are included in the backup done either via iTunes or to iCloud.

As already stated, if the text messages are that important to you, do not rely on keeping them on the device, copy them to a note or email them to yourself.

A restore from backup should clear up the excessive other on the device and put everything back the way it was.  If that does not clear up other, it will be necessary to restore as new.  If that becomes necessary, you will not get your text messages back.  There is no way to selectively restore an iDevice backup.

SMS/MMS/iMessage is included in the backup.

Sync your contacts to a supported Application on the computer or a cloud service.  There is no guarantee with iOS backups that contacts will be restored entirely.
