What version did you upgrade from and upgrade to?
Do you have a back up?

Hi Terrence, The version I upgraded to was 9.4.2 and I was on the latest before that.
I dont believe I have a back up as new iMac and haven't installed my Time Capsule yet! Very worried as looks like I have lost all my photos.. Any advice?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. How large is it?

It isn't in my Picture Folder however in my Downloads. Looks like if it 93GB...so that would suggest that they are still there?! Or am I hoping too much???

Now put that Library in the Pictures Folder. And double click on it. Does it open?

Moved over to Pictures, however Looks like going to take about 3 hours due to size. Will wait till this is done and then open up and see if this works.
Many thanks for your help so far. appreaciate the support

I hope this might help someone that has lost their images when upgrading to a newer version of iphoto.
If after the upgrade you are missing some of your images in iphoto go to the user folder and open the pictures folder. Hold down the CONTROL key while double clicking the iphoto library icon. Select show package contents.
This will show you the actual folders where your images are stored. So your images are not really gone they are still on your drive but not showing up in iphoto because iphoto selected a different library. The menu gives you a number of options and i believe one of them allows you to revert to the old library. This will restore the images as they were in iphoto before the upgrade. I hope this is helpful.

I also lost about 4000 photos, folders all empty, after putting older iphoto library onto external hard drive and opening it with updated iphoto.
found the photos in the pictures folder (although anonymously as jpegs, have to open them to identify them) but how do i return them to iphoto? and why are the other 5000 photos still visible in iphoto?
when i open the package contents in the iphoto library on the external hard drive there is a folder called originals which has all the photos in, but iphoto seems not to be pointing to it. hard to explain what i mean but basically the photos exist, i photo library doesnt see them, the other iphoto library on the computer that came with the upgraded version is fine.
