This usually means your PowerBook G4 cannot load its operating system:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
or
Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)
There are many troubleshooting steps to follow.
Locate your original System Install DVD. You may need it to run Disk Utility to repair the disk, so that you might be able to at least boot for the purposes of copying whatever information on it that is not already corrupt or gone.

Without your Mac's original installation CD or DVD, your ability to fix this will be significantly limited.
Call Apple to order a replacement System DVD. You will need your PowerBook's serial number and money.

Nov 24, 2012 7:58 PM in response to John Galtby mwoj00,sorry to ask a lot of questions but why do they need the serial number, what does it do

Nov 24, 2012 8:02 PM in response to mwoj00by John Galt,They need it because different PowerBooks shipped with different versions of OS X, and contain different hardware drivers on their System Install DVD.
Using a disc inappropriate to your specific model PowerBook will not work. Attempting to use it would likely result in the same problem you are experiencing.

Then you will be in position to possibly repair your internal HD for the purposes of retrieving whatever data it contains, which is what I wrote upon my initial response.
Most likely it is damaged to the point that it will require replacement. If you are interested in doing that, you can purchase and install a replacement hard disk. Then, you will need to install OS X by using the replacement disc you obtain from Apple.
