Have you tried rebooting the phone? Press and hold the top button and the bottom round button at the same time until the Apple logo shows up.
Or try this... from the home screen, double-tap the home button to bring up the app tray.Find the Photos app icon and tap and hold until it wiggles, then tap the little red icon to remove it from the tray.

1. Open the Camera Roll.
2. Tap on the box with the arrow icon at the bottom of the screen.
3. Tap the photos you want to delete.
4. Tap the Delete button.
Note that this only works with the Camera Roll. If you have other albums to delete from them you must unsync them using iTunes.

The original poster is using iOS 6. Your steps do not apply in iOS 6 since it was replaced with the "edit" button.

I have iOS 6 and I just did exactly what I described. The edit button does not replace the square, I is in addition to it. You don't use Edit to delete, you use the square as I described.

Are you sure you're in the camera roll? I'm looking at mine right now... bottom buttons are Albums, Photo Stream, Faces, Places. The top only has the back button on the left and Edit on the right. Tap the Edit button and you can choose multiple photos. There is no other button there to accomplish a task.

Yes, I'm certain. HOWEVER, I went to the Camera Roll by opening the Camera app rather than the Photo Album app.
In the Photo Album app if you tap Edit (which appears on my iPhone 4S running iOS 6.0.1) you can select one or more photos. This enables the Delete button. If the Edit button does not appear it is likely that a Restriction has been set on changes to photos (Settings/General/Restrictions).

Ah, I don't use the Camera app to delete photos, I was in the Photos app. The original poster is talking about the Photos app, then the Camera Roll section within it.
I agree though, see if a restriction has been set.
