I am having the same problem as well with my new iPhone 5. I have noticed recently that even though I am continuously in wifi mode, whether at home or at work, when my screen goes to sleep my phone switches to LTE everytime. So when I go to unlock my screen the mode quickly converts out of LTE and into wifi. I assume this is why I have racked up so much data usage in a relatively short time since I have received this new phone. I hope apple can fix this problem soon!

Have any of the other Aussies (in Oz) here got any further comments to make on 6.0.1 and the bleed problem? I'm still on 5.1.1 and will probably stay there until I see how 6.1 turns out if 6.0.1 appears to be problematic (I'm on Optus, btw).

Alex, 6.0.1 is just fine in Oz [am on Telstra], so long as you follow the guide lines outlined previously in this Forum.

Most users migrate [Restore] everything from their previous iPhone, and in iOS 6.0.1, the settings of some Apps default to different setting.

It is important to work thru the settings to ensure you do not leave Apps set to run on LTE/3G.

As a precaution, install DataWiz, and keep an eye on things until you get settled down.

    Don't hestiate.

And, as a bonus, you will get Apple Maps Voice Turn by Turn Navigation [turned on yesterday], nice...

Hi Robert, many thanks for that :). Greatly appreciated. I d/l-ed DataWiz the other day on the recommendation of someone on this thread but haven't had it running for a day or so. I'll do a trawl of the settings per your advice, while in "airplane" mode. I have to say that I'm curious to see what Maps is like: I've been using Waze over the last couple of months - apparently Waze has involvement in Apple Maps - and apart from a minor quirk with phantom suburbs appearing intermittently, it has been functioning very well.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

    Alex,

One peculiarity of Apple Maps [which has a very simple work around]...

If you are outback Australia, and want to navigate to a Town, try Meekathara or Esperance in Western Australia, Apple Maps finds a location with that name, but it likely to be many kilometers off, and often in the middle of nowhere.

TomTom Maps App, which we previously used a lot in our outback trips, does locate the aproximate centre of a town. I used it a lot to plan our days schedule, from one camping spot to the next.

Apple Maps is designed to take you to an address, and it does that nicely and precisely.

So my work around is simple.  Entre the Meekathara Post Office, and you end up very much right in the middle of town.  Every WA Town does have a Post Office, so you are unlikely to end up in the middle of the desert.

    Have Fun...

    Robert

I have had my iPhone 5, Verizon, for 5 days and I have already used up my data usage for the billing period. I went from Droid to iPhone and before having an iPhone I never once received an e-mail with an alert that my data usage is being used up and I never turned my Droid on wifi. It appears that for iPhone I need to have my wifi on every time it is available. I have disabled one of my two e-mail inboxes. I am so new to the iPhone community I wish I knew what would help with this issue. It is a shame, I am very worried that I won't be able to address this issue.

I'm on AT&T and I've just noticed that I've been having excessive data use ever since the 6.01 IOS update.  Even when I'm using my iPad on Wifi, it still uses excessive amounts of cellular data, I reset my tracking about 2 hours ago and have been using the iPad on Wifi that entire time and yet over 350kb of cellular data was logged.  This is insane and based on my average usage last month I never got above 1.5GB of usage.  I'm only half way through the billing cycle this month and have already exceeded 5GB.  I've never downloaded a movie and rarely use the thing when I'm not on wifi.  Clearly Apple did something stupid with this last update.  Reading how they've quietly sent out a fix for Verizon customers for this very problem, I'm wondering why they haven't done the same for all the other users.  I've called AT&T and they said it's a problem with Apple and might reverse my charges if I bring my iPad to an Apple store and have them check it out for problems.  Like I have time to wait in line and be told what we already know.  That this is a deliberate software issue that Apple is dragging their feet on as usual to fix. If anyone is considering class action, let me know where I can sign up.  Apple deserves to be hammered on this latest mistake.  Only fix I have for this so far is to turn off cellular data usage entirely.  Basically rendering my iPad useless when away from wifi.  Thanks Apple.

I have an iPhone4 on Rogers and I have not experienced the data issues that iPhone 4/4S owners have experienced.  I did the upgrade to iOS 6.0.1  and also did the carrier update to Rogers 13.1 as soon as both were released.  I am on wifi both at home at at the office so that's the majority of the time.  All of my email accounts push to my iphone, and I have a 1GB plan, yet my data usage hasn't seemed to increase in any significant way.  I'm still well, well, under my limit.

My partner just upgraded to the iPhone5 and is also w/ Rogers, but did experience a data usage increase even though her phone has iOS6.0.1.  The only thing that hadn't been done, until last night, was the carrier upgrade to 13.1 I'm assuming this will fix the problem moving forward and that the key, w/ iOS6 and iPhone 5 on Rogers, is to do both the iOS update as well as the carrier update.

I think the carrier update is only for Verizon thus far so the rest of us are currently SOL until Apple fixes it. I've spoken to apple this morning and the tech I spoke with appeared oblivious to any issue at all let alone the Verizon fix. My works Tech support told me today they know about this issue and expect apple will fix it eventually.  Glad I found out about this before going through a full restore and set up as new procedure that the apple help desk suggested.

I'm in Mexico, I got my iPhone 5 four days ago and it has already comsumed 400 MB… my carrier says I've used 150MB, so there's something wrong with the way iPhone 5 measures the data… I used to consume no more than 700MB in a month… Within a week I will have already used my whole data plan… And I think there are no news from Apple about this, right?

Count me in as well.  Two iPhone 5s and used 750 MB and 824 MB in the first 5 days of my billing period.  Just had to switch from unlimited to "share everything" with Verizon.  Monthly average for past 6 months with our Iphone 4 and 4s were 1160 MB and 1450 MB, respectively.  Makes no sense.  Spent 45 minutes on the phone with Verizon asking them to explain why I had a 250 MB "charge" at 10:26 a.m. while phone was sitting on my desk at work.  After a long conversation and the service rep going to "check if there were any tech notices" she agreed to put a note on my account and said I would not be charged if we went over our 6 GB limit.

    This is pretty ridiculous.

I have Verizon and they issued this updated.

    1. Touch Settings, then General, then About.

    2. A pop-up balloon that says "Carrier Settings Updated" should appear. Touch OK.

    3. Wait for the update to install.

    4. Once installation is complete, turn your phone off and then on again in order for it to go into effect.

My phone has been updated and it did not fix it. I updated my apps yesterday while on wifi. I double checked and it showed it was connected. I spoke to someone at Verizon today and he said my wifi must have disconnected. ********! I used 500 mb of data while updating about 20 apps. It said I was on wifi! The only fix Verizon offered me was to turn off cellular data when I'm within wifi. Are you out of your mine? Sure let's inconvenience the customer even more.

Just out of interest, I'm in the UK on o2, just bought an iphone 5 and decided after checking with o2 my data usage was average about 250-300Mb per month, so came off my contract (expired last year) and went onto a 1 year simplicity tariff which compared to my old tariff 35uk Pounds ($56.00) per month is down to 15uk pounds ($24.00) a month, I'm not a big user of the mobile but within a few days my 500MB had gone!!! ***??

So just like to say thanks to the user who uploaded the optimisation list which I shall be going through to see if it helps....

The other thing thing I noticed when o2 said I was close to the data limit 450MB, the iphone said something like 160Mb of usage???

I am having this problem as well.  I have an iPhone 4S and noticed massive amounts of data on my bill after I received an overage alert from AT&T.  This was troubling because I hardly ever use data when I'm not connected to wifi.  I checked my bill and most of these overages are happening in the middle of the night while I am asleep.

The first time I talked to AT&T last week, they had not heard of any problems with the update and suggested I upgrade to a bigger data plan.  Last night I received another notice from AT&T that I am already nearly over the 200MB extra overage data (that they've already charged me $15 for), and this has happened since I turned off all my cellular data.

I called AT&T again and this time they at least said they had heard of the problem and credited me for the overage, but they won't keep giving me credit if it keeps happening and I don't know how to stop it.  Last night I turned my phone off completely to try to make it until my billing month ends tomorrow without getting charged another $15.  Apple needs to fix this!!!
