No disagreement.   Huge design mistake on APPLE's part.   They will never admit it and firmware updates will not fix it.

It is Apple's problem that what design error they have made or not made. Users problem is that they paid a premium price for this f**king piece of sh***t and it doesn't perform up to the Apple specified specs, i.e. 8hr talk time on 3G. Now its not us who said that it must give us 8hrs, its Apple who have set the bar that high and consumers have paid there hard earned money after looking at these specs.

Jameson! your logic is absolutely fine, except one point:
If I use my i5 on WiFi, my battery life is on par with i4 (often it's even better). Playing 3D games is where you'd expect the biggest difference between i4 and i5 considering the screen size and faster processor, but it's not.

Now, whenever I turn the 3G on and start browsing, I can see my battery % disappearing. And there's no LTE at my provider. You see what I mean?

I believe my logic makes as much sense...

The ? Is. Is the competitions batteries any better than iphone 5? ie. samsung, nokia, htc, etc.

I've noticed that, but I think it goes for all of the iOS & Cellular products - 3G is a power hungry beast.

Quick question: Even though my carrier supports LTE, it's not currently available in my city and I am not signed up to receive this service, yet, my iPhone 5 has the toggle for LTE. Do we think this will have an affect on any hardware? i.e. powering certain components for LTE connectivity?

    It's disabled anyway, but curious..

You are assuming that with no LTE signal present, there should be no effect on battery life?   That MAY not be the case.   The LTE Chip, the antenna management firware, etc, may still be operating to some degree, and draining power.   The fact that the phone has an LTE chip and dual antennas may be casuing battery drain, regardless of whether there is LTE signal present or even if you have diableed LTE.   The antenna management systems are definitely more complex.

I'm no engineer and don't claim to know the inner workings in any great detail.   I'm just looking at the specs of the phone and battery and applying some common sense.

If I take the 4cyl engine out of my car and stuff in a big V-8, will I get as far on a tank of gas if I don't put in a bigger tank?

We can try to complicate this issue as much as we want, but I still believe it comes down to the simple fact of power required vs power available.   NOT a firmware issue.

    Better?   No......

    Bigger?   Yes!

I wouldn't know, I've never been able to stomach using one for long enough to find out.

What I mean is that the i5 battery life is worse than i4 while on 3G/LTE, but on par or better than i4 in other usage scenarios. That's just my observations.

I'm no cellular engineer either, but for me it seems the i5 being more powerful/bigger/ thinner is not a root of the issue, but bad hardware desing / software control of cellular data module is.

Have to disagree with Jameson, 100%. Like Ive said countless times. On WiFi the iPhone 5 is a superb phone, I get about 12 hours usage from 100% (no music). Once I switch over to 3G it all goes down hill, ill get about 4 hours. This cant be the batteries fault since it can handle a lot more usage than on a 4 while using wifi (web browsing + gaming).

Its either something to do with the antenna or some software issue that makes 3G suck up more power. Thats my assumption

    Keja3600Although I don't agree with Jameson's opinion, I still think that it's you who's being rude here.

What you are is a 31yr old A $ $ H 0 L E.    How being an industrial engineer qualifies you to know anything about wireless technology, escapes reality.    You clearly have little more than a high-school mentality, so I immediately assumed you were a 9th grader.   Go kick some puppies or whatever it is that makes you Internet "tough guys" happy.   You want rude, I can play that game tough guy.

BTW, you'll still be posting the same drivel long after the rest of us have seen the reality that this phone simply does not have the battery capacity to deal with all of the additional power requirements added to it.   You saw no improvement with iOS 6.01 and sometime in the next several months, you'll see NO improvement when iOS 6.1 is released.   If you're man enough, I'll accept your apology when that proves to be the case.....

Please dont take offence when I say this but have you read a few of the posts above, mine included. The iPhone 5 MUST have the capacity. While on WiFi it is on par if not better than the 4/4S. Once it is switched back to 3G it drains like theres no tomorrow. This doesnt make sense. If it were poor on WiFi, I would understand but I am able to get 12 hours on WiFi, browsing and gaming.

iPhone4Lyf ! I agree that its is not the battery capacity. Jameson is missing something here. Put it in airplane mode and connect to wifi, battery lasts forever with gaming, browsing and with every feature ON; other than cellular part of it. It is the radio hardware or the firmware handling of it, which is not right.

For me, even leaving cellular and 3G on while connected to WiFi gives 12+ hours! Its something to do with the antenna or software. It must be!
