Hi Numbers Helpers,

For the first time in a long while, I tried today to Save a copy of a Numbers document in the '08 format. (Option: File > Save as) I can't find the '08 copy with Finder. Does anyone know where the copy has gone, or is the feature broken? Yes, I did remember to tick the option for "Save a Copy as" and selected Numbers '08.

Or, do you suppose the '08 file is hiding in plain sight? I got an export warning that some expressions would be changed. I looked in the documents with the filename I saved to and couldn't find any changes.

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of Numbers '08 loaded on my computer at this time, so I can't try opening the file in '08. I know I did this sort of conversion years ago and I don't remember having this ambiguity.

I'm still running Snow Leopard, so I can't comment on whether the feature is broken on newer systems, but I just tried to "Save a Copy as Numbers '08" without changing the name or the location and got a warning asking if I wanted to overwrite the original.

I cancelled that, and tried again with a different name. it showed up next to the original, and when I right click on the "08 version, a "Show Package Contents" option appears in the contextual menu, but no such item appears for an '09 file. That might be a way to see if you do have an '08 copy.

I've had similar things happen when I know where I saved a file but it can't be found. I usually save files like this to my Desktop but then they're not there. If I open a Finder window to my Desktop I can often see the file in the window even though I can't just by looking at the Desktop.

Do you know what you named the file? If you're not sure when the file got saved, try saving again & note where Numbers wants to save it. Maybe even go ahead & save again with a slightly different name.

I just did a save as iWork '08 of a simple Numbers '09 file to my Desktop & then opened it with Numbers 1.0.3 without problems. The original file was (& still is) on an external HD. Would you like to send me the original '09 file? I'll give it a try & send it back as '08.
