I just sold a Mac Pro 2008 because the standard hardware was not able to run newer OS and FCP.
Most 2009 on Macs can.
There is a site somewhere that provides the details but I can't recall where.

Everymac.com is where I got my benchmarks and the numbers say the older machine has more processing power, 10564 vs 9237. But, it's older technology. So do I go for the extra processing capability, or the more advanced design of the 2009? RAM would be increased to at least 12GB.

And the winner is...the 2009 Quad Core Nehalem. Even though the older machine benchmarks somewhat faster than the 2009, I decided to go with the newer technology. I am trading some rendering speed for a machine that will be useable a few more years if Apple makes another major change to the OS. The video card it comes with is OK, but it'll be getting a new ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 16GB RAM.
