I installed the new update onto my external drive. I have migrated my previous user accout settings, etc to the external drive. No I need to reformat my internal drive then reinstall the external drive to the internal drive. How do I do this??

Use the Disk Utility to erase the drive, and then a product such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the system.

Can I use migrant assistant to move the files from the external to the internal once it has been erased?

Not without installing an OS on the internal. If you made a Time Machine backup, you can restore it using the utilities on a Mac OS X install DVD or recovery partition.

The external HD has mountain lion installed onto it along with all my settings. My internal HD no longer has an operating system. As long as my external HD is hooked into my macbook, I can use all my original settings. I just need to transfer that HD to the internal HD. Thank you for your help. I will be taking my macbook to the apple store in the morning for them to check it out. Better safe than sorry

You need to install an OS on the internal if you want to use the Migration Assistant to move data to it; it can only move data to the system being used to start up the computer.

To copy yor external drive contents to your internal drive, making it a bootable drive, install Carbon Copy Cloner to your external drive. See http://www.bombich.com/. Use CCC to reproduce all of your external drive to your internal drive. Then, you will be able to boot your internal drive.

All I needed to do was reformat the internal HD. Then an image from the external was cloned back onto the internal HD. This solved my problem. Thank you to all who responded.
