Are you using a PC then or a Mac?

Try running a device connectivity test with the iPod still plugged in. Post back the results.

It wasn't supposed to help, it is merely a troubleshooting diagnostic, designed to provide more information for troubleshooting the problem.

Does the iPod appear in Device Manager at all? It might appear under USB Host Controllers.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resulting numbers and we can decide what your best course of action would be from there.
