OK, don't take my advice. Reinstalling iTunes will remove and reinstall the drivers. But don't do that, because you know that iTunes is working.

It's nothing personal. just that I'd rather try updating drivers before something drastic like removing iTunes.

The link you yourself sent me says:  ... reinstalling iTunes is an unnecessary and overused troubleshooting step.

In the end may be right and I will have to remove and reinstall.

    Thanks

Reinstalling iTunes is not that drastic. It does not affect your iTunes content; only the program and its drivers. And it's the only way that I know of to reinstall the iPhone and iPod drivers.

I had this problem and I fixed it when I deleted about 300 picture out of my photo library on my iphone, so if I had to take a guess ill say you need to have a little under 3,500 photos in your camra roll on the iphone for your device to pop up in iphoto, as of right now I have 3,332 photos and it worked , good luck !

    Try this

1.Go to Windows Device Manager Click Portable Devices >> Apple iPhone >> Uninstall

    2. Unplug and plug your iPhone, now wait for windows to re recognize your iphone [ In Device Manager, you will see the new recognized Apple Iphone ]

3.Press F5 to refresh your windows explorer and your Apple iPhone will show up with a camera icon.

I had this same problem too. Fixed it by following the above steps.

What if your iPhone no longer shows up under Portable Devices?  How do I get the computer to recognize it?

    As has already been posted:

It will only show up if there are photos in the Camera Roll. If you are sure you have photos in the Camera Roll launch Image Capture from your Mac's Applications folder.

Or if you have Windows use any photo management program.

If there ARE photos in your Camera Roll and your iPhone is not showing up as a digital camera try deleting and reinstalling iTunes.

Thanks Lawrence.  I was talking about accessing it through Windows like a portable hard drive.  I find that a much easier way to manually manage my photos and videos that way.

I have found a way that makes NO sense to me that I can now see it.

I deleted a few photos that were taking me OVER my internal storage capacity (according to my iTunes indicator) and then my iPhone appears as a portable device again.

    Very strange.

The iPhone has never allowed direct access to its storage as a hard drive, except for Camera Roll photos. And these can only be copied one way, from iPhone to computer. There are several apps for your computer that will allow you to browse some of the storage on your iPhone.

Yes I was only interested in camera roll items.

    Thanks.

So im not sure if you all have the same issue as i did... hopwever ill describe it and tell ya the fix ... if it works... AWESOME... if not .... not the same issue as i had...

i recently had to restore my iphone and after my iphone restored, i was good .... didnt need to hook it up to itunes for a few days cause i restored from a backup..... after a few days i wanted to add different music to my iphone 4.... so i hooked it up to my pc ** windows 8.1 64bit**, once i hooked it up to my computer i got a tap to choose what to do with this device msg in the top right corner and if i click it it only gave me import and view pictures options.... i looked all around the internet and i saw alot about drivers and such... so i removed EVERYTHING that had to do with apple from my computer i removed all drivers itunes the helper bonjour program everything and i restarted and reinstalled itunes which in turn reinstalled all other drivers and options.... once i did this i reconnected my iphone 4 to my computer and it connected to my itunes.... PROBLEM SOLVED FOR ME.... Good luck all

removing itunes doesnt change any of your downloads or settings because its all on your sign in data... i can sign in at a random somputer and all my stuff will be there except my music it will have the music from whomevers computer i am on..... removing itunes and reinstalling worked for me
