I don't do any banking on any mobile device (iPad, laptop, etc) due to the higher chance of theft or loss. But if I did, I'd use a VPN connection and make sure my unit was password protected. You might also look at the 1Password app that helps manage passwords. I have it for my iMac and its great. The iPad version is supposed to be good too.

I don't do any banking or purchasing with a creditcard/paypal when using my laptop or iPad. Your wifi data can easily be intercepted.

That is not a problem since any credit card or banking transaction is encrypted before being transmitted via WiFi (HTTPS). In addition, a secured Wifi connection is also encrypted - preferably with AES using a strong key.

I do my banking often on my iPad. Wells Fargo is my bank. Your bank will be happy to give you tips to help keep all your transactions safe.
