I made a test and it works.

The name that i use for the fake contact was @@@.

Are you sure that the fake contact has only the old number and nothing else filled?

The contact with the old number MUST be a NEW one.

Did you also check if there is a link by those two contacts?

This sort of works, but is rather clunky. Seems like you should simply be able to delete the original number.

If you prefer this method than to Restore as new, save all these deleted numbers into the same fake contact that you created as @@@. Don't put any letters to avoid unwanted match.

Thanks cheonweb, at least it's better than sending texts that don't deliver.

Hmmm, it works for me because i made the test with a contact that i was never used in message app.

Otherwise is not working. So is the Message app cache and has nothing to do with Contacts app.

I would try to find a tool to clear message cache before make a Restore as new.

I too have this problem! It is quite irritating! I have tried deleting iCloud contacts and importing simcontacts again and still nothing. It wont even recognize that I have contacts on my sim or it just imorts extremely fast. Mind you I have 180 contacts

It's not a Contacts app issue. I thing is a Message app cache.

In that case, Apple should simply introduce a "clear message cache" feature in the next IOS release. We shouldn't have to restore our iphones as new just to work around their bugs or limitations. If Apple insists on introducing a new feature that caches every contact you have ever sent a text message to, there should also be a way to clear this cache. Otherwise, get rid of this feature because it serves no purpose or benefit. Obviously if you're going to go to the trouble of deleting a contact (such as an old number) I dare say you won't have the need to text that number in future. This so called 'feature' makes no sense to me.

This is happening to me to, how aggrivating after spending so much money on this phone something so simple is creating headaches.  I have, as well, sent important messages to the wrong phone number.

And cheonweb, what you're saying does not work.  Even if you assign that number to a fake name, when you type the original contact name, all the numbers still poplulate, except 1 has the real name, and one has the completely foreign name that I saved the old number other.

    has the same issue.

"hided" (i.e. recently removed) numbers even migrate to my new iPhone 5 from my old iPhone 4 when I made restore backup copy process from iCloud to my new iPhone 5.
