I just did it.... didn't do anything.  Still at 2.6gig.

I don't get it... checking and unchecking that box did nothing... don't you have to sync or restart ipad or something?

I unchecked and rechecked, didnt' do anything.

I unchecked, synced, rechecked and synced again.  didn't do anything.

Consider the possibility that you really do have 2.6 GB of other data. If you do the only way to reduce it is to delete the apps that are using all that storage, or go into the app and delete data. If you have the facebook app it could ALL be facebook. It could also be email, mms messages, text messages (if you have saved thousands of them) or any other app.

To Tigervision: I followed these instructions exactly and it worked for me. I think the key is to shut it off and turn it back on (steps 6 and 7). Please do this step by step and let us know if it works!

    1. Go to "Settings" on your iphone home screen

    2. Select "General"

    3. Select "Usage"

    4. Select "Music"

    5. SWIPE from left to right AND DELETE IT (don't let that scare you, yes, hit the red delete button)

    6. Do not Exit the Screen, Shut your Phone off!

    7. Start it back up, next time you plug it to your PC to sync, the "Other" should be Gone

    Thanks Cludia...

I did do that... it screwed up my phone a few months ago.  I can almost guarantee that some of your music doesn't play right... you just haven't found the album yet that skips randomly ;(

I did uncheck music and tv shows.... and sync.  Then added those back and synced and it went from 2.6 to 1.8.

Apparently if you uncheck everythng other than apps, sync and then put everything back it works... but i was too lazy to uncheck my books and movies and photos to see if it would reduce it more . I have tons and I didn't want to write down what was checked to go back and do it again.  I may try it later to see if I can get it down past 1.8.

    Thanks.

    This worked brilliantly!! Thank you!!

You're right...I think I've now inherited another problem. Listening to music on a playlist on 'shuffle' and after a couple of songs it just stops. And the song playing doesn't match the album artwork that appears on the screen. Strange. Wonder if the previous fix of 'other' storage caused this new problem?

Amazing little trick! cleared out 4.9 gigs for me. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oops, getting weird playlist behavior too, now that you mention it.    will test it out in my car w/ ipod adaptor tomorrow.  that was the only place i was using this phone as music player before, and never had a problem.  will also try what tigervision said.

Whoops... apologies for adding this twice... I'm not sure how to delete something posted (I tried to quote&reply to a message and mucked it up, so now I'm editing one of the two duplicate posts with a useful bit)...

Anyway, just want to reiterate here, if you're worried about deleting the "music" usage cache in settings (I know I would be), one option that does seem to work for some people and happens to have worked for me is this one:

    http://osxdaily.com/2011/10/18/itunes-other-capacity-taking-up-tons-of-space-fix /

It takes about .5 seconds and reduced 6+ GBs of other for me to about 1+ GB... it was instant and doesn't seem to hurt anything at all. Almost like resyncing your email box or something (which is probably exactly what it does, resync and clean up as it's supposed to).

If that doesn't work, I know my second thing to try... BEFORE the risky usage deletion... would be to follow the advice of many here to go in and clean up the other things that sync with the iOS device, e.g. the mail box on the main computer, where attachments can accumulate and occupy space.

I'd also follow the suggestion to go into Safari settings on the device and clear those caches.

And then -- I don't know if this adds to the "other" total -- but I would go hunting inside apps that record video or audio data, like the memo recorder or some of the camera apps or kids' "make a storybook" type apps... and see if deleting the excess files there helps.

Okay, hope that's useful to somebody.

I'm checking out of this thread now... good luck!

    Hi Prasad Pawar...

Use this app to clean #other data http://www.imobie.com/phoneclean/download.htm

It's not noted in your message, so I want to put this here in case others miss it:

    a) This link in PP's post automatically starts a download, so click with caution.

    b) The file it downloads is Windows only, so don't bother if you're on a Mac.

    c) You probably don't need an app to "clean" the "other" files. Read the threads, where many solutions are offered. And do try this one, too, because it's worked great for me and doesn't require you to delete or download anything:

Holy crap, that worked.  I don't know why, but it did.  I went from 1.7GB of "Other" to 0.22GB.

Which method did you use that worked JoeyP?

  • eykei Calculating status...

I just did the delete music method. (settings>usage>music> swipe left and press delete)

as many have mentioned, it will lead to playback problems. DONT DO IT.

If you did do it, fixing it is easy. Delete all your music on your phone, and resync it in iTunes. You'll notice your "other" space shot right back up.

My "other" space is at 4.83 GB. on an 16GB phone, that's not really acceptable.

"deleting" the music did bring my "other" down to about 1GB which I was happy with. So i'm not sure, but it seems like it has something to do with the music files.

I'm not restoring, because it will require that i update to iOS6.
