Q: All my system icons dissapeared (finder, menu bar, preferences)

All my system icons dissapeared from at least:

- menu bar

- finder

- preferences

Icons from other software still are visible.

The "Space" for the icons is still reserved and clickable.

All other User Accounts are still working as intended.

I think it occures since today.

Did not made any changes, but if I remember right there was a small OSX Update yesterday,

that I executed today or yesterday night.

But I dont remember the content.

I tried to:

- restart

- log out

- started with cmd + r and used disk utilities to repair the disk (no problems)

- used onyx to repair preferences, user rights, plist

- manually deleted plist for finder, dock, systemui

- killall for dock, finder, systemui

Any help is appreciated.

At first the spotlight service just worked right (it tried to initialize new after repair tries),

but now spotlight icon is completely dissapeared and the cmd + space does nothing.

Just checked, and images in posts are still appearing in other threads. I am pretty sure that is the only way to add an image. I have the following message above the window whenever I click "Reply."

Please add the image directly by clicking Insert Image (camera icon). We cannot accept linked or embedded images.

    Thats exactly what I did.

Also have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?

    Restart holding the "shift" key.

(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)

    I will try this.

    Did not work.

    I restarted pressing shift.

A screen with a loading item and a loading bar appeard.

The loading bar stopped at 30%, i just let go but it seems that nothing happend (I read 3 magazines but nothing changed).

So it seems that the save mode is also corrupt.

We're still just talking about your user account. Safe Mode only boots into your own user. Please list your third party software. You can find it under Apple Menu > About this mac > more info > system report > software.

Also try these suggestions for Safe Mode.

One way is to select all, then copy & paste.

    EDIT: In your Applications folder.

The error: /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search indicates that the spotlight file is missing.

So I will try to repair the system with a new install even if i guess that this will not my user problem.

    Solution:

I downloaded Mountain Lion from Apple Store (yesterday).

Today I executed the Installation File form Launchpad.

The installation executed perfectly and now everything is working again.

Everything: Missing Icons, Spotlight ... is now perfect!

    WT...?

Thanks. Seems like the reinstall of ML did the trick.

Out of curiosity, if you have time would you create another screen shot of something and post it?

I am wondering if the failure of your screenshots to appear (for me at least) was fixed by the reinstall, or if there's something else awry.
