I also have the same issues. However mine started when I had no choice but to repalce my previous tower (5yr old G5) with a new tower at the beginining of September (MD771 / M Pro 5.1 / Mid 2012) including the 5770.

Only having FCS2 at the time, I experienced the exact same banding (1080i XDCAM).

Finally yesterday got my hands on FCS3, I did a clean install of everything including ML.

The result, banding was minimized slightly now, but however its still there.

So therefore even the newer towers don't eliminate this issue.

Something I discovered recently though. (without having to purchase a converter for XDCAM to Prores, and not using the Sony plugin for FCP - which also didnt work for me)

When in finder on ML, select your clip, using secondary click will show an option "Encode Selected Video"

Transcode to Prores, import file into FCP, and then banding is gone.

However though, this comes with other con's: video is reduced from 1920x1080 to 1888x1062 ( = 1% less), Timeline canvas has to match your clip settings ie: Prores 1888x1062, because if you use the Prores1920x1080 settings and you place your clip into your timeline the render process will bring back that horrible banding.

Converting your footage also meant that original file size became bigger ie: 250Mb became 870Mb.

And would this method be able to pass QC at the broadcasters?

The banding issue on my side seems to be related to FCP windowed viewing.

When I view my project in Full Preview All Frames, the banding doesn't show in the full preview, however it is still there in the windowed timeline canvas.

I use 2 monitors, so I have now configured to have FCP (Timelines, Viewers & Browser) on the one and Full Preview on the other. This is the best result have been able to achieve so far.

FCP viewers have NEVER been designed for critical evaluation of images.

If you have a tower, get an i/o card from AJA, Blackmagic, etc that will send a qualified image to a broadcast monitor. ANYTHING else is a proxy image and subject to the vagarities of what that means.

... interesting. To me it doesn't seem to be related so much to the graphis card - I wonder if this issue doesn't vary with different screen resolutions ... What resolution is using Your MacBook Air and the MB 17''? Is there a difference?

A few weeks ago I bought a new Retina MacBook Pro, installed FCP7, began editing and immediately noticed screen tearing in the canvas. The very same 'banding' issue as you describe. After spending a small fortune (all my savings) on a state of the art computer I'm gobsmacked that I now find myself with this issue. I honestly can't believe it and I don't know what to do. I need FCP7, it's my bread and butter software. I've booked an appointment for the Genius Bar this coming week but having read this thread, I'm losing hope that they can help. Have you heard any more on this Christopher?

The issue doesn't vary with screen resolutions. Tearing apparent in all configurations.

Thanks Christopher. I'm still not sure where the issue lies here as some ML FCP7 users don't seem to be reporting any problems. I'm confused whether this relates to hardware or software or both. Have I just been unlucky? I'm praying to God this issue is confined only to FCP7 and not Avid, as I'm thinking of migrating over to Avid due to the discontinuation of legacy FCP, but that's a whole new story!

I'll update this thread after I speak with someone from Apple later in the week. Thanks again for flagging this issue in this forum.

It's not an issue in Avid or Premiere, nor would it be one in FCP7 if Apple would issue a tiny patch but I doubt they ever will. I'm in the same boat you are: new Retina MBP only to find these banding issues. I've just been dealing with it for now while playing around with Premiere more and more on the side. I, like you, would much rather move to Avid than Premiere just because it's the industry standard but the transition from FCP7 to Premiere is much easier than FCP7 to Avid MediaComposer. The whole thing is a mess.

That's great news Christopher. I've also raised the issue with the Genius Bar this week. Although they weren't able to resolve the issue (as expected) they have pledged to take the necessary steps to escalate the problem to the next level and will be contacting me in due course. If enough noise is made about this, surely they have to do something...

I'm still using FCP7..   purchasing a 3.3Ghz Intel 6 core MacPro...   anyone had luck with the nVidia Quadro 4000 fixing this issue?  Looking to purchase that card.  I'm experiencing banding on my present machine.  iMac 27" 2.97hz Quad Core with AMD Radeon HD 6970M.
