    Hello,

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Or in Console, search sor Crash Logs>Safari, paste some text here.

Well, there's some problem with the Hard Drive, let's start with that.

    "Try Disk Utility

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

    3. Click the First Aid tab.

    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

First of all, THANK YOU for your help.

I have the Mac OS X disk but a few questions:

    1. by C Key I assume you mean Control Key ... correct?

    2. About the following

Do I click on the Install logo? If so, and before I select Restart, I try to select Disk Utility but nothing happens.

Opening the disk window but before clicking on the Install logo, I can select Disk Utility BUT ... there are two Calculate Image Checksum options: (CRC-32 or (MD-5).

    Does that make sense?

I believe I did the Safe Boot -- but the issue rermains.

    Thanks again.

Just the c key alone, no control ley or other, should make it boot grom a CD/DVD, also alt or option key at boot should show startup manager to choose boot device.

Do not click on tje Install button, you've gone too far if you see that. It's easy to miss the Utilities menu at the top of the screen.

I want to thank you for your help.

I ended up paying $20 for phone support and fixing the issue -- though it took two reps and 45 minutes.

    Thanks again.

Good to hear, do you know what the fix was?

Well, we created a Test User and the TU was able to open and use Safari -- so something was corrupted in my account.

We trashed a bunch of folders and files ... I think it might have been a plug-in that was bad.
