I spent six months moving all my iWeb pages to Host Excellence thanks to advice from this forum. Unfortunatley, they shut down my site today because (despite having unlimited "space") I've run into a limit on the number of files they will host. So, I need to find a new host that will allow more than 300,000 files. I have 397,000 files currently and they've agreed to restore my site but I will now need to spend another two or three months moving everything somewhere else. Any suggestions for a web host that will allow "unlimited space" without a "file limit"?

GoDaddy don't appear to say anything about the number of files, though obviously you would need to check this before committing yourself.

If this is the case you could upgrade to the Ultimate business account which allows you to set up multiple root folders with their own IP address.

Divide and conquer. You don't need domain names - just use the IP number.

Once you have created new root folder(s) you can transfer the files between folders on the sever without having to upload them all again.

Have you tried changing the permissions using the Host Excellence file manager?

That's strange that you cannot open the file manager.

Who are you dealing with at Host Excellence? Have you tried phoning your "Personal Support Agent"?

@Roger Wilmut - Just to clarify we do have a file limit on our shared hosting accounts. It is 1024 files per directory/folder. For the entire hosting account it is 500,000 inodes on Linux and Windows. Thanks for the inquriry though! ^Colby Go Daddy Social Media Team

Thanks for that. There seems to be no way of checking on this - not that I'm anywhere that limit, but for more active people it might be a useful facility.

This is, hopefully, the relevant part of the Host Excellence Terms of Service. Note that the file limit is 300,000 with the Linux plan. Apparently the server should not be used to store files which aren't available for download on the internet. I take it that this means you can't backup your Mac to the server!

Host Excellence offers commercially reasonable high-limit or unlimited amounts of disk space and/or other resources, such as bandwidth transfer, number of email accounts or FTP accounts. File quota limits are enforced to ensure system operating integrity and reliability and are limited to 100,000 files on Windows plans and 300,000 files on Linux plans. The intention of Host Excellence is to provide ample resources for customer convenience, so that customers needn't to worry about exceeding limits.

It is acknowledged by users of Host Excellence services that these resource allotments are optimized and dedicated towards serving web documents and self-need email / FTP services and is not to be used as offsite storage area for electronic files, or as a provisioning service for third party email or FTP hosts. All downloadable files or files stored on the server must be available for download via a HTML document stored on the Internet in a publicly or privately accessible area, and must be directly related to the general nature of the website index. Illegal content such as pirated software, music or other media are strictly prohibited and are not allowed on Host Excellence servers.
