Have a question regarding obtaining new serial number for the Aperture program as after my mac (version 10.5.8)  had a Logic Board replaced

Aperture program ( 2.1.4) does not open as require serial number what I do no have anymore (all packaging gone long ago).

So if I  buy a copy of Aperture 2.1.1, it will give me a new serial number.

Will I be able to use that serial number to open the program I have (aperture 2.1.4)?

Or what is the best way to obtain images from the program i can't open anymore?

Thank you

First of all, I'd recommend to contact Apple with a proof of purchase for a replacement serial number, see this link, of what information you should be able to provide: Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers

To extract the photos from your Aperture library, try to browse the package contents. I have never used Aperture 2, but the Aperture library package probably will contain folders called something line "Masters" with your original image files inside. Try to ctrl-click the Aperture library package and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. Then browse the contents, but do not change anything inside.

If you are going to buy a new Aperture version, why not buy Aperture 3 instead? Aperture 3.1.2 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1369) is compatible with Mac OS X (10.5.8). But can you upgrade the Mac OS X on your machine to Lion? Then you would be able to run the current Aperture version.

I am not sure, where you still can buy older Aperture versions. YOu will have to google for it.

Sorry, I forgot to answer that part of your question. Yes, if you buy a version of Aperture 2.1.1, you can use that serial number tu unlock your current Aperture version - you can unlock all Aperture 2 versions with it.

But if you buy Aperture 2.1.1 and install it, you need to run software update immediately to upgrade to the version that you used last with your library - you cannot open a newer library with and older Aperture version.

Thank you so much for coming back so fast.

Thing is that even if i click on Aperture library all it gives me is pop up window asking for serial number.

I dont have prove of purcahsing anymore.

As this is my old mac I dont want to invest more upgrading software on this mashine as planing to buy Aperture 3 for my new mac, so all i need is to get images from existing Aperture

and seems only way to do it is to buy another Aperture 2 and get new serial number .

ps.u can still buy Aperture 2 on ebay

Don't simply click - "ctrl"-click: Hold down the ctrl-key or the right mouse button while clicking. Then you should be able to browse the package contents and to look for master image files inside. If you can get your images out this way, I'd wait with buying Aperture until you have your new mac.

How soon will you be getting your new Mac?  Aperture 3 on your new Mac will be able to convert and to upgrade your current Aperture Library.

Compare the prices. The Aperture 3 version from the App Store is much cheaper than the retail versions of Aperture 2 and 3 ever used to be. And the licence is better. It entitles you to install the program on any mac you control (for private purposes). If you could get Aperture 3 from the App Store installed now, the licence could later be used for your new mac as well (it might even be cheaper to buy Aperture 3 + Mt. Lion from the App Store than buying Aperture 2 from eBay) .

I dont have prove of purcahsing anymore.

I'd still contact Apple Support anyway. Show them any proof that you have been using Aperture since many years - the creation date and size of Aperture library and explain that you need to be able to run Aperture 2 to repair your Aperture 2 library before converting and upgrading to Aperture 3. They might be very accomodating and give you a replacement serial anyway, if they understand that this is only needed transitory, while waiting for a new Mac and Aperture 3.

Great!  I did manage to open and able to take master images out, but i have 79 files with almost 10k images. Does it mean i have to keep opening each file and each image to get it out? or there is easier way?

I do have my new mac already Version Lion 10.7.5

"Aperture 3 on your new Mac will be able to convert and to upgrade your current Aperture Library." - How ?

"Aperture 3 on your new Mac will be able to convert and to upgrade your current Aperture Library." - How ?

Do you have an external drive, where you can copy your Aperture Library to?

Make sure, this drive is formatted Mac OS X extended, before you copy the Aperture Library to it.

Also set the "Ignore Ownership" on this volume flag. (When you select your external drive in the Finder and use the "Get Info" command, you'll see this flag in the "Sharing and Permissions" brick.

    perms.png

    • You can simply drag the Aperture library to the external drive, using the Finder.
    • Then connect the drive to your new Mac.
    • Now you first need to repair your Aperture library - it is safer:
    • Select the Aperture library on the drive in the Finder. Hold down the ⌥⌘-keys and double click the library. Select "Repair Database" and let that run. That may take some time.
    • After this you should be able to double click the Library and to open it in Aperture 3 as regular library.

Without an external drive you need to copy using the Network or to mount your ols Mac in Target Disk mode http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3838?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US. Connect it to your new mac with USB or firewire and boot it with the T key held down.

Then your new mac will see the old one as external drive.

To extract only images from your saved Masters folder, select the Masters folder you copied in the Finder, then press ⌘F. In the search panel that opens add a search (press +) and set the search to "Kind is image".

This should show all images in the folder.

Caution! If the headline is set to "This Mac" and not to the name of the folder, you need to edit the preferences of the Finder. In the "Advanced" tab of the panel set the "When performing a search" to "Search this folder".

Don't touch any images in the search, if the heading shows "this mac". Then you are risking to move any image file on your mac.

    FWIW,

Aperture 2 library is much different than Aperture 3 in terms of looking at the library package contents.

For more info than you might want to know but an in depth look at the breakdown of the AP 2 library package, see this link:

    http://archive.bagelturf.com/aparticles/library/libinside/index.php

In short, the master images reside in packages (inside the library package) with the extension '.approject' which then has a folder with date code and an '.apimportgroup'  extension where you will find the imported master files. This will be true for each project in the library.

The AP 2 library is much more difficult to extract the master images from manually. Depending on what your financial situation is, it might be more convenient to purchase a new serial number (or have Apple send you a replacement if you can).

    Right, Corky,

that is why I suggested to open his Aperture 2 library in Aperture 3, since he has  Aperture on his other mac, if Apple will not graciously provide a replacement serial number.

    • Convert the library on the other mac and extract the images using the Aperture version he wants to use on his new mac.

I just think it to be very wasteful to invest into a new expensive Aperture licence key, for a very old mac, if he could use his Aperture 3 to do the job. Aperture 2 will not be very useful on his new mac with Mt. Lion.

    Cheers

    Understood.

It is just an FWIW, since the conversion from AP 2 to AP 3 was not without issue.

Just like the conversion from AP 3.2 to 3.3!
