I discovered the same problem with Spotlight. It has nothing to do with your hardwared. There is a bug in the latest OS release that occured on 9/1/9/12 for both Lion (upgrading to 10.7.5) and Mountain Lion (upgrading to 10.8.2).
I spent the better part of 3 days with Senior Advisors trying to troubleshoot the issue, including verifying and repairing disk permissions, repair disk in Recovery mode and even a fresh install of Lion. I don't know why so few senior advisors are aware of it, but the senior engineers said there were at least 50 calls about this problem on Friday, 9/28/12 alone.
FYI - This also renders Time Machine useless if you're running 10.7.5, not sure about 10.8.2 since I still use Lion. Do not erase your backups trying to troubleshoot your external backup drive as I did, because now I have no backup.
Apple's current recommendation is to run Software Updates every day to catch the firmware release, but that's all they're saying at this point. Keep your fingers crossed that we don't have to wait for another release.

I have a Mac Power and a Macbook.
The Macbok is great, and indexes perfectly.
The MacPower has 2 cpu's and 2 HD's, plenty of Ram; but is much slower.
The only files that it will find in spotlight are:
no other files are found which means that I have to do a manual search.
Hate to say it but Apple is loosing a lot of quality points!
