I have a fairly new 13" MacBook Pro. Roughly 6 months old (as in over 90 days but less than one year warranty). Just starting to use it (skittishly preparing to convert from PC). Happily no files at risk (OK just one).

System stuck on start-up white apple screen.  Found my way to the OSX Utilities Menu, tried Repair Disk: "Macintosh HD could not be repaired".

#1 - Why would this happen? Should I be concerned about hardware problem with HD (it's hardly been used)?

#2 - Is recommneded reformat as easy as "erase disk using Disk Utility" from Utilities menu?  How do I reload OSX (no discs in box)?

Sorry, not sure what Operating System I'm on but have tried to keep current with updates.
