I downloaded a Safari plugin called XML View Plugin.webplugin and have
no idea where it should be placed to work in Safari 5.

It did not come with an installer and I have not found Safari Plugin folder.

    for all users : in HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

or for just specific users : Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

In either case, Safari will need restarting for it to become active.

I copied the file to the Internet Plug-Ins folder and restarted my MacBookPro. But, I'm still not able to view the XML file with the formats - it's all text without any breaks.

    I'm using Safari 6.

    Hi Meera

safari from 10.7 on doesn't support  webplugin types, if that's what you're using

you might look for a suitable extension

or a more up to date plug-in
