Apple's AppleScript Editor has limited ability to recover damaged/corrupted scripts.
The best tool I've found is Script Debugger. it's a commercial script editor (that does way more than AppleScript Editor). It costs, but there's a free trial - I think the free trial can also recover scripts - can't hurt to try.

I also posted this question on the MacScripter Forum. And just received another solution there. As well as your solution, but I tried the other one first.
For those who are interested:
this is the solution that worked for me:
write an Applescript with this code:
set f to choose file
do shell script "osadecompile " & quoted form of POSIX path of f
And then run the script. It worked!. It returned my script as text in the result window of AppleScript.
