Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library"
Then go to Preferences and delete com.apple.Preview.plist

macjack, thank you for the reply and help. Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick. Still, after deleting com.apple.Preview.plist, working with a TextEdit document and then closing it (and then going to another application), Preview no longer appears when I use Command-Tab. Your effort, however, is appreciated.

I can't reproduce that here. What happens in another account, like Guest or a fresh account you create?

macjack, thanks again for trying...logged in as a guest but still got the same, non-working result.

The only thing I can think of, is if you're running low on memory it may be auto-terminating. What does your memory usage look like in Activity Monitor?

I know I've said this a few times but again, thanks for trying. It's not a memory problem...this is occurring on my MacBook Pro with 8 GB RAM and the Activity monitor shows almost 5 GB free. This all has happened only since I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
I really hate what Apple is doing, combining Mac OS X and iOS. If I wanted to use a smart phone on my computer that would be fine but they've really screwed up OS X by doing that. My "serious" computer is a Mac Pro with 16 GB RAM for Photoshop, graphics, etc. I have Snow Leopard on that, never have a problem and will never upgrade past that...I believe Snow Leopard is Apple's last, great, mature OS X system—all things work exactly as they're supposed to. Apparently Apple, in it's infinite wisdom, is bringing those of us that have used Apple computers forever, into the realm of Microsoft. I'm totally disgusted!!
Anyway, now that I've vented, thanks again for trying to help.
