MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Solved the problem. Returned it.

I just got mine Yesterday. Macbook Pro Retina 16GB custom build from Apples website.

I got a LG screen. I didn't notice anything wrong with it nor could I see any IR. I think it takes time for IR to develop from what I read here. At least that's the impression I got, that it gets worse over time.

I return it for my Macbook Air.

My source tells me that that 661-7171 (Sammy) serial number still exists and the old 661-65** number (LG) was replaced with a 661-70** part number. The new 661-70** number is B/O'd and only the 661-7171 part is availalbe to order.

It would make sense that at this point Apple would rather admitt nothing but replace any screens with the Sammsung (661-7171) part as most of thses screen are bing replaced are for customers having the persistance issue. Multi replacements has got to cost more than any difference in screen costs. By B/O'ing the LG part they slove the issue while continuing to ship as many LG's as possible and only replacing with Sammy when required.

Also, While Apple has never had parts seperated via part numbers as related to supplier, in this case they do... I submitt this was known and that is why only this panel has two different order numbers for the same part on the same model/version of one product. In the past, they have always had one part number and the supplier did not factor into anything. You ordered the replacement part and the panel was whatever it was Tosh/Sam/LG/Sharp...etc.... They have also stated the they are to order the part they remove. Which means LG for LG and Sammy for Sammy - until now that is, when only one part is available.

This entire debacle is a major dissappointment.... In the past, early adopters of Apple product took a chance they could be affected, however always knew Apple would make it right. It's the cost of bleeding edge innovation. Now, it's not so clear. I don't think there are more problems today, I think there's been a shift in service resotration policy at Apple. Problems and mistakes happen, how we deal with them is what defines us as individuals - and as a company. I few rotten apples only spoil the bunch if you leave them in the crate and don't deal with them properly.

Great post Dazouri. It is Apple's repsonse that most worries me and has stopped me hitting the button on the rMBP 15. I am not confident that if a problem does arise Apple will fix. I cannot believe in the Apple FAQ knowledge base there is a suggestion that you simply use the screensaver more and/or leave the screensaver on for as long as you had the image up and the "within specs" crap - that is just outrageous.

It is just a sense but I can't help but think this sort of behaviour feeds the Apple has peaked theory (it has to peak sometime). The whole dispute with Samsung (and others), customer service issues etc are classic monopoly behaviour of arrogance & protecting their patch at all costs. We have about 20 Apple devices in our family of 4, we buy nothing else but I have actually searched for the next best laptop after the rMBP because of this issue. I'm not going to buy one but that I actually looked is a big step!

This is my screen. First picture shows a checkerboard pattern after 5 minutes. Then it shows the retention immediately after switching to a gray backgroud. The final pic is after one minute. Still has persistence. WHY is Apple insisting after TWO visits to the genius bar that this is "not" an issue?

This entire mess has kept me from buying a 15" rMBP. At one point, I was ready to buy two of them (for Christmas). Then, by chance, I got wind of these image retention problems. I've got a 13 MBP (2011) and love it, but no way in **** I'm spending $3k for a problematic laptop...whose main selling point, *the display*, is the entire problem.

I could forgive Apple for the LG issues. The don't manufacture the screens. I can't forgive them for the **** they're putting customers thru. The denial of the problem, the games they're playing with false tests to "prove" you don't have a problem, the general hassle of making customers visit the store 2, 3 or 4 times trying to get a legitimate replacement. That, they could control. That is entirely within their control and they've displayed how Apple will treat their customers.

Add in the iOS6 Maps fiasco and you just have to wonder.

The irony is that the screen is the main selling point. That's the money shot. That's why you buy that laptop. And the screen is faulty.

Exactly, I'd feel like a real sap buying one now. I had real confidence in the product until I researched at the last minute. Had my online configuration done and was ready to roll. Now im thinking the Air and getting a rMBP when and if this is all sorted.

I contacted a re-seller here in Australia (complicated but he is not an authorised reseller but is legit etc) and said I'd buy if he can assure me it is Samsung but I dont think he can. Said he is "pretty sure" it is but I don't find that too reassuring.

Also waiting on the 27 IMac & wondering about potential problems there, so it is frustrating. Can see why (perhaps) the Imac isnt Retina!

Given the break up of Samsung and Apple hard to see how Samsung screens will be around much longer on Apple devices

And there's the problem, at least in the short term. If I bought a rMBP tomorrow and it came with a Samsung screen, I'd be worried. Not about IR, but what if something else happens 10 months from now. Will they give me an LG screen then? They can't give me what they don't have access to, and if Samsung screens are no longer going to be in inventory (long term), then it raises an interesting dilemma.

Personally, I've given up on the idea of trying to buy a rMBP. LG, or some other firm, needs to prove they can manufacture this to what I'll call Steve Jobs level of quality. If I wanted a crappy laptop, I can get a Dell or an HP. A Kia is not a BMW, and a Dell or HP is not an Apple. The difference in price points reflects a difference in expectations of quality.

Just adding another data point: I got my retina MBP 15" when they were released. I have used it quite a bit but didn't notice the image retention until just a week ago (it was an LG screen). I took it to an Apple store and they replaced the screen with a Samsung one (lucky!). Not happy I had to go to the mall twice during this time of year 😉 - but I am glad it started having the issue before the warranty expired. The service agreement said the repair would have costed $720 otherwise!

Is there any source or does anyone know that Samsung have stopped producing/selling screens to Apple for rMBP? Above points are right if there is a problem down the road it may not be possible to get a Samsung. You would like to think the whip is being cracked at LG to sort their crappy screens out.
