You can try erasing the disk..

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4522?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

It seldom works. The problem is beyond any repair by software..

If under warranty or applecare on computer purchased within 2years of the TC return the TC for replacement by Apple.

They do not replace drives.. they will give you a refurbished usually.

If out of warranty open the TC yourself and replace the disk.

Is there any way to recover the data?

    a) without voiding the warranty?

    b) otherwise?

    Thanks!

If you had files on the TC without backing them up.. then you broke our fundamental rule.. The TC is a backup device not a file store. That is not intended badly.. but people think we are too pessimistic about the TC.. as you can see the answer is no we are not.

You cannot recover files without removing the hard disk.. if you do that neatly.. who is to know if you put it together again.

The file recovery utilities must work on the drive directly. So you need the drive out and plugged into a computer via USB holder or other suitable method depending on equipment you have available.

You need to buy a file recovery utility which are always $99.. Disk Warrior or Data Rescue 3.. the later has a working demo which will at least show if the exercise is worthwhile. Otherwise you pays your monies and hopes for the best. They do not refund.

There is hope if the drive has lost format.. the later TC with green WD drives this happens frequently.

But if the drive is damaged in any way it needs to go to a data recovery person.. and that is expensive and recovered info is often useless.
