Do you connect the external HD and verify it is recognized properly by Windows before opening iTunes?
What happens when you try syncing?
Do tracks still play okay from your iTunes library?

Thanks for your response.
The external hard drive was already connected to this computer and the library was opened which identified its content in text format.
I next connected the ipod which gave me the option to sync, (I note that the name of the ipod was recognised) but then a pop up requested I cancel or erase and sync with this library (the start library) - this I did and it erased the content from my ipod.
I guess the original library on the external hard drive is still intact.
Note: the library content is entirely made from copies of my CDs and dosn`t include any downloaded content.
Also I have two other Nanos
