Have you already set your phone up to sync with microsoft outlook?
Is itunes up to date as well as your iphone?

Yes, the phone is set up to sync. For some reason, if I sync the phone, appointments/ contacts made on my laptop appear on my iphone, but not viceversa...what could I do?

Check if you have more than one Contacts account.
Go to Contacts app then tap on "Groups" button upleft.

There is only one contacts account ("contacts")...
