Q: iTunes 11 not updating play count & Last played

What a Bummer!

There is something seriously wrong with this update. That has happened never before!

Who's the next to leave from Apple?

I turned off CrossFade but that didn't initially work, I also had to restart iTunes, then it did.

    Yes you must:

    1. turn off crossfade

    2. restart iTunes

I have a similar problem where anything I play on my iPhone is not included in any smart playlist after syncing.

Anything with iTunes on my Mac seems to work OK with smart playlists.

    I have this problem too.

But I have tried the above suggestion of:

    1. turn off crossfade

    2. restart iTunes

This has NOT fixed the problem for me.

I have a few movie 'soundbites' that are a few seconds long - so it's easy to keep playing these and see if the placounts/last played info is being updated, but no matter how many times I play the files, it still says the same playcount and last played a month ago.

    Frustrating.

Thanks. Saved the day by turning off crossfade and re-starting.

Thanks AxnJackson11 -- had to quit and restart iTunes 11.0 but turning off crossfade worked great.  Saved me lots of search time.

Turning off crossfade did the trick. Now the play count is updating. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Thanks for noting the fix. Songs played on crossfade before always used to update the play count. Why would you want it any other way? I can't believe Apple didn't test something as basic as this.... quality is slipping all the time now. Very disappointed.

Turn off Crossfade and restart iTunes - doesn't work for me. Never had it on in the first place, though. So turned it on, restarted. Nothing. Turned it back off and restarted. Nothing.

If I play songs on the Mac, all's fine. On the iPhone, nothing.

Do you autosync your iPhone or do you manually manage its contents?  There've been problems in the past with manual mode with respect to playcounts and rating changes, perhaps that's what you're seeing?

For some reason, I did not have to restart iTunes for the Crossfade fix to work.

    Who knows?

Autosync ... always have. Whatever happened for me happened on the 6th November 2012. No iPhone sync since then. Perfect prior.

'Recenty Played Playlist' on the iPhone is screwed too. Some days, it's an accurate reflection of what I've played. Other days, like yesterday, there's a couple of things I played but the rest is all about what I played prior to the 6th November. Some days too it'll reflect what's been played on the Mac. Some days it'll show what I've played and later on that all disappears. It's completely hit and miss, and mostly miss.

Then this is not really an iTunes 11 problem then, you may want to review this thread:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3408222

By the end of the thread, there are some speculations that if you run very near the full capacity of your iPhone then you may run into problems with playcount updates, but of course this is not proven but you can see if that applies to you.

Also, are you using iTunes Match by any chance?  That may also contribute to such a problem.

I agree with the quality comment. I keep coming across numerous glitches that never were before. Is it that since Jobs passed away, apple is going to forfeit quality for profit or? Unsure if i even like the "new" itunes as well. Really like Apple, but wish they'd re-embrace their quality level.

Phone capacity is 32Gb with 9.5 free.

    Yes, I'm using iTunes Match.

Talked at length to an Apple Senior Advisor yesterday who couldn't resolve the issue but who concluded it was an issue with iTunes Match. I don't sufficiently understand the whole syncing/Home Sharing/iTunes Match detail to be able to comment.

If I make progress with the iTunes Match folks, I'll update here.

Don't know whether this is relevant or coincidental or irrelevant ... on the date that my iPhone stopped playcount/last played syncing was the same date I got and set up an iPad. I've now turned off iTunes Match and Home Sharing on that device to see if that makes any difference.
