Q: Inaccurate Unread Messages Count

Why is Messages showing the wrong unread count? After I read the messages in the chat window it still says I have unread messages and I can't make it go away. If I exit that chat window it disappears, but if I start chatting with that person it shows the unread message count again...

I updated to ML 10.8.2 with clean install (http://eggfreckles.net/notes/installing-mountain-lion-clean/) and the issue went. Now unread counter updates property when I read messages.

    MacBook 6,1 - 10.8.2

Sometimes there are 3 or 4 unread message, but all messages are read

    Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

    Hi.

I've been annoyed by this problem lately. It's a drag, but logging out and back in was enough to update the dock badge.

This, by no means is a fix, but the workaround that I've found is simpley re-launching Dock. Open Activity Monitor and find Dock - select Dock and quit that process. The Dock should re-launch and the incorrect badge count should be corrected.

relaunching the dock did it for me.. none of my messages were marked unread in the app, but there was that nagging red "1" in the dock, (and also in the command-tab menu). Relaunching the dock cleared it out.

Thanks Ben! This totally did the trick for me. I know you don't consider it a "fix", but it is for the short term, and that's good enough for me. My psychological need for accurate notification icons thanks you!

    Thanks Again,

    Peter

3 years and 2 OS versions later the problem still persists. Apple has become worse than Microsoft.

I have got this issue.  No messages are actually unread but both the Dock icon and icon in Launchpad have a read badge indicating an unread message.  The blue unread indicator also shows in the conversation list.  It is showing for my conversation with my wife.  And after some brief investigations it appears that it may be related to Messages/Contacts somehow conflating my contact details with my wife's details.  I'm not sure how, but if I send messages to my number that message gets sent to my wife.  Whilst tinkering I also sent a message to one of my registered email addresses, the message then got sent to me as if it came from my wife.  The unread message badge incremented to 2 and is now stuck on 2.

    Will now try PRAM reset.

I tried resetting PRAM but I have a firmware password so ran into trouble.  Did however find a better method that works…

    • In Message preference check the option to "Save history when conversations are closed".
    • Close the offending conversation (the conversation in which Messages wrongly thinks there are unread messages).
    • Go to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages in Finder.
    • In the archives folder there double click the archive file of the conversation you closed.
    • The conversation will reopen without the incorrect unread message count.

Whether this lasts is to be seen.

    Hi,

    That is an interesting fix.

I would check the Contacts App and the Card Menu > My Card and check it has your details.

If it is someone else's card there can be various issues that are hard to track down.

I would also check the Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages Account for the Receive At options. (this also effects the Start Conversation From drop down).

There is a similar setting on the iPhone.
