Are you sure your headphone jack is plugged on the way in.
I use my earphones too, but my alerts come thru the earphone. Are these the headphones that came with the phone?

Yes, the headphones are plugged in all the way. They are not the headphones that came with the iphone. But that shouldn't matter.
The alerts DO come through the headphones. That's not my complaint. My problem is that they come through the earphones AND the iphone speaker. I don't want it through the speaker if my headphones are plugged in. I'm on a train.

That's intentional. If you were sitting on your couch with the headphones in, then set the phone and headphones aside for a few minutes and walked across the room, you would never know if the phone was ringing if the ring didn't sound through the speaker as well.
If you don't want it to, just flip the mute switch. It will not affect anything coming through the headphones, but it will prevent the ringing from coming over the phone speaker.
Note that if you have set alarms, they will ALWAYS sound through the phone speaker, even if it is on mute.

Thanks KiltedTim. I guess I can't have it all. The mute switch still allows the ringer through the headphones, but if I get emails or texts, those don't come through the headphones when it's muted.....
