Thank you Bhazel, as I mentioned I have already gone through these support pages and have not had any success repairing my phone.
I think the issue is the fact that the Apple Mobile USB Device is not listed in my device manager folder so I think I have to install it somehow but cant find a link for the download. Or perhaps someone has a different view on what could be wrong

Yes..if you read my post...I uninstalled and then reinstalled but the Apple Mobile USB Device/Driver is still not listed in my Device Manager folder on my laptop and my phone is still not recognised

I had this with itunes 10 and still have it with itunes 11. With me it's apple mobile device support that itunes says it needs. Like you ive been through many of the uninstall and reinstall episodes. No luck. Now I don't even have apple mobile device support in the list of add/remove software control panel - it just is not there, so I can't uninstall it. Though - apple mobile device support is running in services? I've tried to upgrade to a later version of apple mobile device support - but that just rolls back after a while leaving me back at square one...
Just about given up on it...
