I don't see how this is working. If I click on one of the Home Share computers in the iTunes sidebar, I used to be able to drag songs from that Home Share onto my own Music folder and it would copy the music from that computer to mine.
Now, with iTunes 11, I cannot drag any songs from the Home Share computer. I can play the song from the Home Share, and if I right click on the song, I can select "Copy" but it doesn't seem to actually copy anything.
Finally, for playlists, I can "drag" them from a Home Share, but it won't let me drop it anywhere in my own iTunes.
Did Apple take away the ability to copy from one Home Share computer to another computer on the same Home Share?!
My experience is the same as yours: the homeshared library is visible on the remote computer and music from the shared library can be played on the remote computer. However, from the remote computer, drag-and-drop doesn't seem to drag anything and while there is a 'copy' command availble, it either doesn't copy anything or the 'paste' into the libary residing on the remote computer isn't working. Regardless, this functionality doesn't work for me.
While, my particular situation is a little more complex in that my wife's laptop is running Windows 7 with iTunes 10.x, but still, copying between libraries has always worked flawlessly since the advent of Home Sharing.
I've been toying with the idea of trying to downgrade back to iTunes 10 and this issue is just another thing swaying me twoards attempting it...
PROBLEM SOLVED -
I found this on someone else's post on another website...
You have to sign into your home sharing with the SAME apple ID and password on each computer. It's common for people to want to put their individual/own ID and password on "their" computer, but that is not correct to fully authorize home share. Even on someone else's machine on your network, you still use the same apple ID and password for all computers you want to home share with. The other computer isn't getting access to your account or anything like that. You just have to use the same ID and password on each machine and that will enable home share among all home share computers that logged in with that ID and password. Otherwise you will just be able to see and stream the other computer's content, but you will not be able to copy it over or drag and drop.
I am having the same problem. I can drag and drop shared music from my new mac on the itunes on my old computer, so the music i have on my new mac i can add to my old library but this isn't working for me in the reverse and I dont believe it's possible? I think the only option is to keep doing the drag and drop with home share on my old computer (maybe because it has an older version of iTunes?) and then just use that iTunes to keep my ipod up to date and not the new mac. If I'm wrong could someone please help me because this is super inconvenient?
I too am having this issue. We have a PC and MAC in the house and have been sharing for years.
Suddenly we can now ONLY see and stream each other's library. We've logged out, logged in as the same on both computers, rebooted, flipped HOME share on and off.... still NOTHING!
Normally one of us buys an album and the other would copy one or two songs to their computer. This WAS wondferully easy with the "Not in my library" function.
I'm shocked that I'm still seeing this issue. Normally Apple has taken care of bugs like this.
If anyone has and idea.... PLEASE shoot it my way. I'll do the same if I come across a fix.
