FCP will see it as long as you get it to connect to the computer. If you have a Thunderbolt port...that is how you connect it. If you don't, you need an adapter...Firewire to TB.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I marked your answer helped, because the computer was seeing the drive, but FCP would not let me import a file from it into the browser. I just tried it again, and I must have been doing something wrong initially, because now it seems to work. I'm a newbie to the support group; is there a way to change my "helped" to a "solved my question?"

I'm working with GoPro (MPEG4) footage for the first time. I am converting it in MPEG Streamclip to Apple ProRes(LT). I am still having a bit of an issue with getting the sequence parameters and converted footage parameters to be the same. Thanks for your interest in my problem.
