Nov 26, 2012 11:39 PM in response to Highlordkramby Ryanph,II was hitting the same issuue and the Apple website states to simply chang the From address to @icloud.com and everything will work. of course you have to do this for every outbound mail, so I checked the Mail applet and could NOT edit the email address as it is locked. SO, I removed my account and added back THIS TIME I used my @icloud.com account to sign in INSTEAD of my AppleID and it took the account and got me setup using my iCloud account instead of my @me.com address. SO it looks like the @icloud.com is not only an email alias but can also be used for authentication/logins as well.
Try this and see if it fixes your issue. I was surprised I could use my alias to login when creating a new icloud account, but hey it worked, whew!
Hope this helps
....Ryan

Nov 29, 2012 6:37 PM in response to Virginia Garnitzby lynn54,Virginia,
I'm writing to make sure that the solution you listed here addresses the problem I'm seeking a solution for. I want to change the email address that is tied to my iCloud account. (I know that I can create and change alias email addresses tied to my icloud account, but I want to delete the original email address that I created when I created my icloud account.)
I just want to delete this address because I created it in haste (not realizing that I could not change it), and I used a nickname that I do not like. It bugs me to have it associated with my account; I just want it gone.
Does this sound like the problem you had?
Thanks.

Dec 1, 2012 7:47 AM in response to lynn54by esteban2800,When I talked to Apple support, I was told that the first email account you create with Apple is your main account for everything and it can not be deleted. In my case, my original email address was @aol.com and that is what I have to iTunes, iPhone, etc. I don't use this account at all because I have created other aliases such as @icloud.com and @me.com. However, all these aliases are tied up to the parent account @aol.com and the parent cannot be deleted which is shows as my main account when I log in to iTunes.
The alternative is to stop using your primary account and direct all your emails to the alias account of your choice. How do you do that? Just point your email address as default to the alias of your choice and stop or delete the other accounts from your iPhone, PC or Mac. The parent email address will reside on the servers but you will at least stop using it. Apple might realized some day that this is a waste of email space. Hope this helps. The sort answer is NO.

Dec 28, 2012 6:02 PM in response to Highlordkramby Kceballo,Matt's way worked for me. I started a new email address and I had already changed my apple ID to the new email address but when I went to settings in my phone it wouldn't let me change the email for iCloud so I deleted the account and when I went back into settings and then iCloud it showed my new email address and I just had to enter my password, took all of 5 seconds

Jan 12, 2013 11:21 PM in response to lynn54by carol1945,I think I have a similar problem and wonder if anyone can help me. I have a @mac.com and a @me.com email address. It has the name of my former husband. I want that name gone, all I want to change is the name@me.com I do not understand why I cannot do this. The Apple website states anyone with @mac.com or @me.com cannot change.
This email address is also my apple id. I just want to change the name part of my apple id. The guy at the Apple store said I would have to delete the entire account and lose any music or books that I bought.
